Taking Lunch Money!

Wuddduupp friends?! Hope all is well and everyone is avoiding the snowmagedon happening outside. We’ve been all bundled up on some eskimo type ishhhh but our Timbs are still soaking wet. Can anyone help? No? Okay. Anyways, we’ve had two really dope shows back to back with some crazy music, videos and cyphers.

First things first we NEED to talk about this Shady XV thing. So Shady Records is celebrating their 15th year anniversary this year and to do so they are dropping an album next week featuring a whole whack of different people from all over the record label as well as the industry as a whole. On top of that (probably to promo the album) Eminem, Yelawolf and Slaughterhouse got together for an 18 minute acapella cypher. Everyone remembers the BET Awards Shady 2.0 Cypher and this new one gives it a run for its money. Check it out below as well as a new track off their upcoming album.’ ______ vs. Everybody’ on the way?

On top of that we talked about J Cole’s upcoming album, YG’s movie and of course the whole Kim K naked photoshoot.

Lastly, we took a look at Your Old Droog’s new LP. If you don’t remember YOD, let me give you a little reminder.  Way back in the summer time we talked about this unknown rapper from New York who sounded EXACTLY like Nas. Like, almost 100% like Nas. A lot of people thought that he was actually Nas. However, we eventually found out that he wasn’t but the raps are still amazing. Anyways, he recently released his full length self titled LP. There is really no other rapper right now doing what he’s doing. His use of boom baps and jazz samples makes us feel like we are back in the 80s/90s. Peep our faves below!

Well, that’s it from us this week. Check us out same time same place. Make sure to check us out on Twitter for all the updates and so on and so forth.

Way More Fresher, With Way Less Effort

Wudddupp friends?!  Hope you guys aren’t drowning in midterms and such because lord knows we’ve been keeping a low profile when it comes to school work. I mean, I like class but… Anyways, put on a really dope show for you guys whether you were pre drinking for Phil’s or studying for midterms. Either way you slice it, it was a good look.

We kicked things off with some new Childish Gambino. Donald dropped a new mixtape hosted by Atlanta OG, DJ Drama. It is essentially his very own Gangsta Grillz mixtape. It features all existing beats in which the ATLien himself spazzes on them with no holds barred. His lyrics are sharp and his delivery is cunning. It isn’t the most conventional project from Gambino who has typically been more of a “make my own beats and hooks and verses” kind of guy. However, on this tape, he gets on his 2006 Lil Wayne tip and murders other people’s beats. There are a few original tracks on the project which balance it out. Peep our faves below.

In other news, Drake is a sending threatening texts, Wu-Tang’s got the bars back, Dej Loaf is getting a deal and Cassidy is a dead man walking.

We then stumbled on a conversation that has been on the back of our minds for a while. With the recent announcement of TI coming to Toronto and London, it brings up the question: Is he a GOAT? I mean, on paper, TI has had just as many hits and longevity in this game as a Kanye or a Weezy. So then why is he performing for 55$ at a small venue in London, Ontario? For one, he isn’t as relevant now than others but there is no doubt he can be considered the greatest (at one point). What do yall think? Is TI one of the greats? Should he be playing these smaller venues? Let us know via Twitter.

PS: check his new song with Pharrell below.

Well, that’s it from us this week. Make sure to tune in next week because guess what? WE ARE HERE FOR READING WEEK! We may be coming at you a bit later but hey, we’re back up in this thaaang; it’s a go.

Where We Been At?
The Rap Up/The Rap Up

Where We Been At?

Wudduupp friends?! Hope all is well in school-land. Over here in radio-land we have been busy. Apologies for not being on the web in a minute but we are back now with that real real. We are going to recap you on the past three weeks. Get ready, this may take you a while.

Three weeks ago we had a few friends on the sho. TJ and Rafey from our very own newspaper, The Cord, came on and shared their thoughts on the current state of hip-hop. We chopped it up about Big Sean’s recent releases and how salty he is about Naya Rivera breaking his heart. Peep his obviously directed track below. #StrayShots

We also had an interview with New York rapper, Sammus. She has been killing the local circuit for a while now. Her tracks mix all different kinds of flow, beats and delivery but the message is very concise; girls have bars too. Her summer mixtape Another M got some real attention from major hip-hop publications so naturally, we had to get her on the phone. We talked about everything from the state of females in hip-hop to Kanye’s influence on her music. She may spaz on tracks but she’s extremely down to earth and easy to talk to. Did we mention she currently goes to Cornell as well? Pretty dope mi; a rhyme slinger and a scholar. Check out our fave track below and remember to follow her on Soundcloud.

Last week we had some real Gs on the show. The entire KTDA family came thru and updated us on what they’ve been up to. They literally stepped on the plane and came to Waterloo after a three week studio bender in Dallas, Texas. Konfident and the gang have been busy promoting their latest release Liberty which dropped back in May. They are between shooting videos, doing remixes, making clothes and living it large. Kon’s also got a hit on his hands. His coming of age track ‘Everything I Wanted’ is getting some serious plays on local stations in Canada and in some American cities. Be on the lookout for new music really soon but for right now peep the video below. vaaaaMMMMosss.

Now, this past week we took it slow. After a crazy month, we just relaxed and talked that real. We played some new music from Mr. Childish Gambino who just dropped a fire mixtape called STN MTN. It is hosted by DJ Drama so you know he is going over some other rappers’ beats. He legitimately murder some old school beats like ‘Go DJ’ and ‘Southern Hospitality’ but also got busy on beats like ‘Money Baby’.

We also ran thru a list of the 10 best auto-tune songs of the last five years. T-Pain mastered the auto-tune effect back in 2006-2009 but recently years ago, he has fallen off. There are a ton of reasons why this happend but one of the most prominent reasons is because he didn’t evolve with the vocoder. These days, hip-hop sing/sung tracks are more spacey and foggy, T-Pain was sticking to his ‘Buy U Drank’ flow which didn’t fly. That being said, we recapped some tracks that are doing it right. Peep the full list below and let us know what you think via Twitter.

Tony Montana – Future

Turn On The Lights – Future

Citgo – Chief Keef

Blood On The Leaves – Kanye West

Guilt Trip – Kanye West

Dis Ain’t What You Want – Lil Durk

Up Down – T-Pain

Money Baby – K Camp

Danny Glover – Young Thug

We Dem Boyz – Wiz Khalifa

Anyways, that is it from us this week(s). Our dearest apologies for not updating you sooner and we promise to keep up with the blogs each and every week so you guys can get all filled in. In the meantime, make sure to follow us on Twitter * @RLRapUp* and tune in next week for more of the same!

Dear Summer…

Wuddduupp friends?! Hope you guys are semester ready because it is literally right around the corner. Seriously. We here at The RapUp have been tirelessly preparing a full show for you next week but in the mean time just check out what we did last week!

We kicked things off with a few requests and some new tunes from Mr. Childish Gambino. He dropped a little one off called ‘Chandler Road’. It sounds like a ‘Because The Internet’ leftover but he seems to be rapping with a little more conviction. Is a project on the way? Perhaps. Listen below.

In other news, Breezy is guilty, Jeezy is outta jail, Weezy is killing on tour and Iggy is keeping it sleazy. Easy.

Next up we addressed a serious issue that probably concerns a ton of you guys. Have you ever had a birthday party, bat mitzvah, or maybe even a shin dig with friends and just wondered how much it would cost for your favorite rapper to perform? Well, I have. Now all those questions are answered. We found a list of how much it costs to book the biggest names in rap. Check the full list here and a few notables below.

Who’s On The Beat?
The Rap Up/The Rap Up

Who’s On The Beat?

Wuddduupp friends?! Hope you guys are getting your back to school items all ready because we are back in class in 2 weeks. Scary, right? Well, no need to fear because some real hip-hop ishh is here. Was that corny?

We kicked things off with some new tracks the game’s hottest DJ. “Mustardonthebeathoe!” Sound familiar? That’s because DJ Mustard is THAT dude right now. His beats are bringing back that classic west coast sound with a new flare. He has made beats for nearly everyone is rap today and shows no signs of slowing down. Aka he just dropped a new album. Now, usually I’m skeptical about DJ albums but it seems as if Mustard took a page out of Khaled’s book and focused on the hits. DJ albums can be really polarizing. They can be just an hour worth of stupid beats and drops or they can have hits. DJ Mustard’s album entitled ’10 Summers’ features some smashes from the usual suspects AND a Boosie feature. Word to Dijon. Check some of our faves below.

In other news, Jay and Bey aren’t divorcing, Remy Ma is back in these streets and YourOldDroog is performing in a few weeks.

We also had a nice impromptu visit from one of Honours Class’ finest. Producer Cian P came thru to talk new music and what it like to make quality hip-hop beats. He also brought thru friend of the show, Nick Skills. More commonly known as just ‘rik’, Skillins stepped up to the mic and spit some serious bars. We don’t have anything recorded yet bu something is coming real soon so make sure to keep your ears to the streets. Or the tweets. Either or.

Well, that’s all from us this week. Make sure to tune in next week for more of the same thaaaang.

Packed The Crowd!
The Rap Up/The Rap Up

Packed The Crowd!

Wuddduupp friends?! Hope all is well with your closing summer days. Summertime sadness. Isn’t that a song? Anyways, we had a super tight show this week. We played some wicked local music and talked about hip-hop live. Anything better? Didn’t think so.

We kicked things off with some realness. This past weekend, I attended OVO Fest in Toronto. In short, it’s Drake’s annual hip-hop festival in which he brings out a plethora of special guests and absolutely turns the city into a rap riot. It’s fun. Anyways, he performed a song I had previously deemed “just okay”. The song is called ‘Days in the East’ and at first listen, I wasn’t blown away. After having it grow on me for a few months, I started to like it a bit better, but still not in love. On Monday night at the Molson Ampitheatre, Drizzy performed the track and.. well.. it total changed my opinion. Having it performed live in the city that it’s about allowed me to find a deeper appreciation for the song. And guess what?! I have had it on repeat ever since. Funny enough, this happens a lot for me.

Tracks like ‘On Sight’ by Kanye, ‘Taylor Gang’ by Wiz Khalifa and ‘U Don’t Know’ by JayZ had me buggin’ at first listen but when seen live… they are now my favorite tracks. Has this ever happend to you guys? Let me know on Twitter but in the meantime, peep the video below of Jay-Z performing ‘U Don’t Know’. Just try and tell me that you aren’t considering it being your wedding song.

We switched gears a bit and dropped some fresh new music from a new hip-hop duo coming out of TDot. They are called 390waterTrash. Strange name, but strong songs. They have a unique 90s boombap, sample heavy sound that knocks thru any speakers. They are consistently dropping new music every few weeks and plan to hit the underground circuit real soon. They rap about everything from turning up, to girls, to recycling. True story. Check their track below and let us know what you think!

Well, that’s all from us. Check us out next week same time, same place.
