Week 06: October 24, 2016

DJ Nix was in NY, but DJ Deej and DJ Winks took to the studio last night. It was a day of nostalgia as Aubrey “Drake” Graham turned 30 years old. DJ Deej reflected on listening to tracks off of So Far Gone when she was 14 years old, and remarked that one of her favourite albums is 2012’s Take Care. DJ Winks did not have a favourite, but really enjoys this year’s Views. Both agree that the mixtape If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late is also well done, especially when compared to the joint tape with Future titled What A Time To Be Alive. The Toronto-born artist released three new tracks on his famed OVOSound Radio, episode 32. There are rumours of a mixtape to be dropping in December, entitled More Life.

In entertainment news, DJ Winks brought forth yet another concert incident with Justin BieberThe 22-year-old Canadian pop star left in the middle of his set in Manchester last Friday due to upset over fans screaming and cheering during the breaks in Bieber’s performance. Justin Bieber has been quoted as saying, “I don’t think it’s necessary when I’m trying to say something and you guys are screaming,” (Sky News). Week 08: After Class Summer Edition

DJ Deej and DJ Stretch made it back to the studio. Deej is still on the wave that followed OVO Fest 2016 / Summer Sixteen Tour. She went on the Monday night and saw Roy Wood$, dvsn, Popcaan, French Montana, Rihanna, and Kanye West as the special guests. Future performed all of his best hits and features, and of course, Drake gave a performance only worthy of the 6IX. DJ Stretch is heading to his first wedding at legal drinking again this weekend. He suggested to the bride and groom that they use “Cold Water” by Major Lazer ft. Justin Bieber as their entrance song. Will they? We’ll find out.

The Rap Up: Calm Before the Storm

Kanye West’s New Album Is Finally Here… Sort of

With the unveiling of Yeezy Season 3 at Madison Square Garden, yesterday in New York City, the music world continues to wait with baited breathe for the moment The Life Of Pablo has a download button beside it. Now, no one’s quite sure where The Life Of Pablo will be released but logically, we imagine it should be through Tidal (which Kanye West owns a portion of). According to the ever entertaining twitter account of Mr. West, the album is currently being mastered and should be out at some point today however, no specific time has been given. Admittedly, we over here at The Rap Up aren’t too impressed with the final title change, however I, TJ Mroz your Rap Up co-host, am a big fan of the recently released cover art and purposely downloaded Tidal for an early premiere of the album during the streaming of Yeezy Season 3 (instead of studying for my midterm). From what I’ve heard, the album should certainly live up to the hype, however may not sound exactly like everyone is expecting, which isn’t a bad thing. Beware, Yeezy season approaches.

Future > Young Thug

If you’re a fan of Future and Young Thug, you may be aware that the only people possibly riding a bigger wave at the moment would be Drake and Kanye West due to their upcoming and highly anticipated albums. With two brand new projects already in 2016, Future has decided to give the fans a new mixtape (Purple Reign) and a new album (EVOL), both receiving a warm welcome by fans. On the other hand, Young Thug has come through with a new mixtape titled I’m Up however the project looks to fall significantly short of its sales goal, expecting to move a mere 15-20k including streams, while Future’s Evol which was released on the same day looks to move around 145-150k with streams. While Thugger loves to claim the opposite, there’s a clear gap between these two artists. Not to mention Future just inked a brand new deal with APPLE which should push him far beyond the realm of Rich Gang fame.

All-Star Weekend 2016 Approaches

As the weekend begins, so does NBA All Star 2016 and in case you’re out of the loop, this is a BIG deal. As a result of “the 6” hosting the league’s All Star festivities this year, it will be the first time the event has been held outside of the US. Stars such as Steph Curry, LeBron James and Canada’s own Andrew Wiggins will be taking part in multiple events this weekend. This is also great news for the Raptors who have 2 All Star representatives this year as Kyle Lowry starts in his second straight All Star game and DeMar DeRozan was selected by coaches to round out the roster of the East. If you’re on your way to Toronto, good luck and be sure to bundle up as it will be busier and colder than it’s been in recent memory. The first day of events begins on Friday with the Celebrity Game in which Kevin Hart will be coaching one team and the 6 God himself, Drake, will be coaching the other. The Rising Stars challenge will also take place on Friday as the best of the NBA’s up and coming stars showcase their skills against each other. Saturday will include highly anticipated events that include the Skills Challenge, Three-Point Shootout and Dunk Contest. Rounding out the weekend will be the All-Star game on Sunday.

Kanye Being Kanye

There are many things about this world we don’t know, and in similar fashion there are many things we do. Included in the things we know forsure; water is wet, light illuminates darkness, fire is hot and when Kanye West goes on a twitter rant, Its nothing short of EPIC. This recent spectacle was instigated by Wiz Khalifa who in a series of tweets, which made light of Kanyes appropriation of the term “waves” from hip-hop pioneer Max B. Things really got out of hand when Wiz added a cryptic “kk” in one specific tweet which Mr. West promptly mistook for a reference to his ever-so-coveted wifey Kim Kardashian. After an immensely entertaining exchange of words from both sides, it’s now been confirmed that Kanye West has indeed called Wiz to apologize and according to both artists things are “all positive”. We’re glad Kanye and Wiz worked it out, and be sure to check out both of their upcoming albums.

Meek Vs Drake

This is beef is over. It shouldn’t be a topic right now. However, that’s far from the truth. After dropping “Charged Up” and “Back to Back” last July, Meek Mill dropped “Wanna Know” which was just horrible, therefore, he didn’t stand a chance to win the beef. Fast forward to January 2016 and Meek took, yet, another shot at Drake through his own version of “I’m the Plug”. Surely enough the “6ix god” dropped “Summer Sixteen”, which took shots at Meek. One verse specifically references a time in the Summer when Drake and his crew were staying on the floor above Meek and Nicki Minaj, Meek’s girlfriend, blasting Back to Back. However, this is where it gets interesting. Not even 15 minutes after Drake’s newest single dropped, Meek released part 2 of his 4/4 EP. The song “War Pain” specifically references that night in Toronto and other parts in Summer Sixteen such as when Drake states “I used to wanna be on Roc-A-Fella then I turned into Jay” as well as making mention of Drake’s dance moves in “Hotline Bling”. Shortly after releasing the 2nd part of EP, Meek took to instagram and captioned a picture of him laughing as “the ghostwriter told me”. This raises questions about whether Drizzy does indeed have a ghostwriter or, perhaps, a mole in the OVO camp. However Meek was able to retaliate so fast, this beef seems to be taking the form of boxing match. Drake won round 1 but Meek has come back and is looking more prepared for Round 2.

Future Looks Bright for Future

Turns out SnapChat isn’t the only company DJ Khaled has been working with recently. Khaled announced several days ago that he had actually inked his own deal with Apple Music. We’re not exactly sure what that entails, however we do know that DJ Khaled will be premiering his new radio show on Beats1 this Friday (5th). Now we know Khaled isn’t for everyone. That his ad-libs and shouts can get old really quick however the man knows music, and can probably curate a better playlist than most people on the airwaves. But, what’s better than the premiere of a brand new Beats1 show? How about a double premiere? and by that we mean the premiere of Future’s new album EVOL which will debut on the show Friday (5th). If you haven’t caught the wave yet, you might want to get acquainted before it’s too late to bite.

Meek Mill Do Not Pass Go

It seems no matter how Meek Mill rolls the dice this year, he’s taking L’s. Unfortunately for him he might have just picked up the worst Chance card possible, and if the Philadelphia Courts decide so, Meek will be going directly to jail. Stemming from charges over nine years ago, Meek has officially violated his probation again, which if you remember, was the reason for his absence this time last year. After providing a suspicious drug test which he failed, and leaving the city of Philadelphia without legal permission to attend the 2015 AMA’s with girlfriend Nicki Minaj, Meek will face sentencing in February. Amidst a historically bad year for the Dreams & Nightmares rapper, fans can at least breathe a little easier knowing Dream Chasers 4 is on its way.

Can Young Money & Cash Money hug it out?

Looking back on 2015, it’s difficult to ignore the the blatant stain that the Cash Money x Young Money feud has imprinted on Hip-Hop. Tour Bus shootings, disrespect from Young Thug, throwing bottles in the club, lawsuits, diss tracks, AND the fact we still don’t have our hands on Lil Wayne’s final album, The Carter 6, is just the tip of the iceberg. Despite the fact that Birdman and Wayne are legally father and son, The Young Money x Cash Money empire has seemingly all but crumbled in the last year. This is pretty disheartening considering years ago they were one of the tightest knit collectives, and one the most popular labels in the game. While the situation is about as ridiculous and convoluted as they come, Mack Maine president of Young Money, has made some much needed progress. Reportedly only hours before Drakes NYE party this year, Mack Maine held a conference call between Lil Wayne and Birdman (Baby) in which they agreed to keep it civil, however, Wayne is nowhere near dropping his lawsuit against Birdman. While any progress is good at this point, fans are still hoping for progress in the form of a new album.

Cole & Kdot

According to the Chinese zodiac, 2015 was the year of the sheep. However for Hip-Hop fans everywhere, 2015 was also the year of the ‘joint-album/mixtape’. Migos, Young Thug, Metro-Boomin, London On Da Track, Fetty Wap, French MontanaDrake and Future seemed to have renewed everyone’s interest in the possibility of a joint album this year. However, after dropping remixes on a track from each of their most recent albums this past Thanksgiving, J. Cole & Kendrick Lamar look to possibly steal the spotlight in February with their own joint project. After Kdot’s sister of all people let slip there was something arriving in February, the internet has been ablaze with speculation. Kendrick has even gone on record recently saying Drake & Future produced some of his favourite music this year. Could that mean “challenge accepted”? Fingers crossed.

Adele & Drake Sitting in a Tree

R-E-M-I-X-I-N-G?… After going double platinum in three days, Adele is looking to have some fun and remix the song everyone just can’t seem to get enough of “Hotline Bling”. However we know someone of you hate everything about it, and to that we advise stay patient, it’ll all be over soon… let’s just all be thankful UpTown Funk has pretty much disappeared. During Drake Night at the Air Canada Center while the raptors hosted the Cleveland Cavaliers, Drake revealed he wants to anything he possibly can with Adele, even as far as doing her laundry.

Projects All Around

American Thanksgiving has always been a fantastic holiday to receive and acquire gifts. This is no different for those who love Hip-Hop as it seems, every year around this time the digital streets are fed. American Thanksgiving 2015 however, was no different. Fabolous, Trey Songz, Lil Wayne, Lil Bibby, and Rick Ross came through in excellent fashion and all dropped off projects last weekend. Of course we apologize for the increase in your bandwidth usage for this month but who can resist a line-up like that?

Your friendly neighborhood MC

A few months ago Marvel, the superhero empire, started releasing what looked like comic book covers, however upon closer inspection, it’s obvious that Marvel has a huge appreciation of Hip-Hop. Marvel has been consistently remixing famous and controversial Hip-Hop cover art and putting a superhero spin on it. Nas’ illmatic, Lil Waynes The Carter 4, Futures Dirty Sprite 2, and Drakes Nothing Was The Same, have all seen the spotlight so far. Currently Marvel has re-done over fifty cover art’s and plans on releasing a 32 page comic book showcasing 14 of the best remixes, that is set to be sold in participating stores on January 6th.
