Week 7.2 – February 27, 2017

DJs Deej and Winks were in the studio last night after a relaxing Reading Week. Winks and Nix will be hosting next week, while Deej is at the Matthew Good concert. He is playing at Maxwell’s Concerts & Events, and she will be writing a review.

The Oscars, Steve Harvey Style: Although moreso the fault of the Oscar staff rather than that of Jimmy Kimmel, the wrong film was named as Best Picture for the first time in the history of the awards. After Mahershala Ali won Best Supporting Actor for his role in Moonlight, he was able to go back on stage for this award, which was originally awarded to La La Land.

Future: Not one, but two, but perhaps a third Future album is coming. HNDRXX is said to be the favoured of the two newest releases. Winks mused about the possibility of HNDRXX squandering the success of Future, but Deej believes that are enjoyed for different reasons, and all different levels of Future fandom. With the upcoming Nobody Safe tour, featuring Migos, both agree that providing fans with such a wealth of new music was a smart move.

NAV: After dropping “Myself,” as a single, NAV has released his debut album. Both Deej and Winks are happy about the album, pleasantly surprised at the release.

Drake & the More Life Playlist: Winks is especially anticipating the More Life playlist, which some media has alluded to a release this upcoming weekend. There are already quite a few tracks floating around, so at this point, it only makes sense to release the rest of the list… right? Fingers crossed!

Get Out: Advertised as “100% on Rotten Tomatoes,” there is a lot of curiosity and controversy surrounding this film. Neither of the DJs have seen this film, and Deej is especially skeptical because of its primary classification as a horror film.

Festival Season: It is fast approaching. Winks is thinking that this is the summer to attend his first festival. He is curious about the line-ups for both Osheaga and Ever After in Kitchener-Waterloo. Deej did WayHome in 2015, and OVO in 2016. Nix has done Boots and Hearts, and is considering WayHome. Updates to come!

Radio Laurier’s “Hip-Hop Hangout”: Monday, March 13 marks the return of the Hip-Hop Hangout. It will be held at the Pub on King in Uptown Waterloo. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Week 6.2 – February 13, 2017

The trio was in the studio for World Radio Day, talking about the UN and World Radio Day, the Grammy Awards, and Valentine’s Day.

World Radio Day

World Radio Day was started by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) in 2012. It is a themed day that focuses on fundraising, awareness, and promotion of the Arts.

Themes:

2013: UNESCO-themed: 75 interviews, 130 fundraisers worldwide

2014: Gender Equality + Women’s Empowerment in Radio

2015: Youth and Radio

2016: Radio in Times of Emergency and Disaster

2017: Radio is You — celebration of audience interaction with radio personalities

The Grammy Awards

Although DJ Winks missed out, Deej and Nix really enjoyed Chance the Rapper’s performance. Nix also enjoyed Katy Perry’s comeback and performance. We can likely expect new music from her soon. A pregnantBeyonce went all out with performance, featuring a bunch of dancers and her on a throne. Consensus? A bit too much/over the top. Ceelo Green’s contribution to the night? Giving us the meme material we’ve all been longing for. He was even photoshopped into several of Donald Trump‘s family photos:

Winks reported on albums expected this year. They are coming from: Flume, 2 Chainz, Rick Ross, Drake, The Killers, DJ Khaled, Future, and Enrique Iglesias.

Valentine’s Day

Whether you refer to it as “Singles’ Awareness Day,” “Galentine’s Day” or “Tuesday,” we have agreed that it is not about grand gestures, but about the person you are with. If you are lucky enough to be in love, every day is Valentine’s Day. If you’re single, give that love to yourself, or your loved ones. Either way, self-love and self-care is very important.

This week’s track list is as follows:

  1. Doo Wop (That Thing) – Lauryn Hill
  2. No Diggity – Blackstreet ft. Dr. Dre and Queen Pen
  3. Summer Girls – LFO
  4. Same Drugs – Chance the Rapper
  5. Ain’t No Rest For the Wicked – Cage the Elephant
  6. Never Be Like You – Flue ft. Kai
  7. I Love You – Axwell, Ingrosso & Kid Ink
  8. Dab of Ranch – Migos & DJ Durel
  9. No Heart – 21 Savage & Metro Boomin
  10. Bittersweet Symphony – The Verve

Mondays from 10-11 p.m. Tune in, and turn up.

The Morning After a Crazy Week

Hello and good morning Golden Hawks! Hopefully you’ve had a fantastic week and no issues easing into those dreaded midterms. This week O$AP and Goldilocks had lots to talk about as it’s been a hectic week in world events as well as within the Laurier community.

The show started with a segment regarding the Miss Universe Pageant and this year’s winner, Iris Mittenaere from France! The returning host, Steve Harvey, had the chance to redeem himself successfully after announcing the wrong contestant as the winner in last years pageant. If you’re interested in reading more about the pageant, click here!

Next on the celebrity list is Justin Bieber, who made an appearance at this years NHL All-Stars competition. Apparently his coach for the big game was hockey idol Wayne Gretzky. O$AP and Goldilocks had to debate who would have been more excited to meet the other. The conclussion was definitely Bieber being more excited, even though it’s probably safe to assume Gretzky is a big pop fan!

And last on our celebrity list this week is Lady Gaga who will be performing at this year’s Superbowl, where the Patriots will face the Falcons. Though she’s quite the performer, it wasn’t clear whether or not your Morning After DJ’s agreed with her being this years pick for the biggest football game of the year. Hopefully she can keep up with the legendary entertainment of the Superbowl commercials and get the crowd even more pumped for the game.

In this weeks Laurier news, we send a well-deserved congratulations to the new Student Union President Kanwar Brar! Such a motivational and involved new president will surely show that the Golden Hawks are in good hands. Also coming this week is the voting for positions in the Laurier student publications. Between 7-10 PM this Wednesday February 1st, come enjoy some free food and good company in the Hawk’s nest right beside the Turret. Get involved and send out your votes! To read up on the candidates and other information regarding WLUSP, click here!

Lastly, Laurier sends it’s condolences to the victims of the Quebec mosque shootings on Sunday. To anyone involved and connected with the family’s affected we send our thoughts and prayers.

Have a lovely week Hawks! We’ll see you next Monday on the Morning After!

The Morning After… The Weeknd

the-weeknd-starboy-arrows

This week was certainly a big one for DJ O$AP and Goldilocks! As many of you already know, Starboy is finally here! Quite possibly the biggest musical day of the year for the two DJ’s, since their common love for The Weeknd is the reason this radio show exists! There’s been half a week’s worth of talk and debate about this highly anticipated album and you can rest assured that they were not disappointed. Eighteen brand new songs, with the exceptions of the four premature releases, and a single seductive interlude featuring the lovely Lana Del Ray. The Weeknd kept the feature list pretty simple with Starboy, but there’s no let down when you see the names Daft Punk, Future, Kendrick Lamar and a sneaky untitled feature of Sam Smith in the song Sidewalks. If you didn’t get to see the anxiety provoking teaser trailer called M A N I A that the Weeknd released just before the album came out, there’s a link below where you can check it out! It was almost torturous to watch short clips of his new unreleased songs just a few hours before the official album release, but the high intensity of the video clips in the trailer were once again, surpassed all expectations!

It’s safe to say that the music world is in agreeance that the new album is good… but how good? Does it compare to those timeless songs we heard on the album Kissland and the mixtapes from Trilogy? Well, after admitting Goldilocks was a die-hard Hilary Duff fan, and O$AP has been in love with Ellie Goulding since early high school, it was agreed that both DJs’ music taste heightened when they found a mutual love for The Weeknd. The early productions of The Weeknd are what defined their new favourite artist; his unique sound and vibe setting him apart from any other artist on the market. It would take a lot for The Weeknd to top his original work, and after much debate Goldilocks and O$AP have decided that they need more time with the album to truly decide if it is on par… stay tuned each week to stay updated on their debates!

Angel, from Beauty Behind the Madness is arguably one of The Weeknd’s  most original, ear-catching songs ever released. The vocals and lyrics of the track provided The Weeknd with an anthem that truly resonated with his fans. The biggest question about the new Starboy album is which song, if any, is able to compete with Angel? Thus far, Die For You stolen the hearts of both DJ’s but unfortunately does not quite measure up to the Angel standard. Though the track really gets those university emotions flowing, it just doesn’t seem to hit as hard as that heartstring-plucking anthem Angel.

It’s easy for the DJ’s to give their opinions on the album… but how is the rest of the world feeling about The Weeknd? Well, it’s safe to say Starboy is destroying the music charts and held the #1 spot in 80 countries within a mere 24 hours after release! Looks like it’s a lot more than just Goldilocks and O$AP that are falling in love with these tracks. He has taken over the music charts, claiming 18 of the top 20 songs!

On a far less important, but still awesome note, O$AP got a new phone! To end this week’s show, the DJ’s had a quick discussion about the new Google Pixel and the awesome new V.R. features it holds. For those who don’t know, V.R. or “virtual reality” is an exciting new technology that’s getting noticed fast. It’s a visual and audio experience that places you in a new virtual graphic world where a V.R. headset accessory allows you to interact with the simulated environment. It even has zombie games! Um, NO! Goldilocks and O$AP won’t be tough enough to play those games for quite some time. They’ll be taking the much more relaxing, scenic route for now… enjoying the simulated butterflies and calming lakes! If you want to learn some more and check it out, take a look at some of the links and videos down below!

Thank you so much for tuning in with us this morning! Have a wicked week Laurier, good luck to everyone preparing for their final exams and working on those last minute final assignents! We’ll be back next Monday morning! (probably still fan-girling over the Weeknd)

Summer Sixteen Tour

Drake and Future finished off their second Summer Sixteen show in Atlanta last night, by bringing out hometown favorites Gucci Mane, Young Thug and Usher.

While there may not be a flying stage, Drake and Futures Summer Sixteen tour has been shaping up to be a “can’t miss” showcase of special guests. In Chicago, the pair brought out Kanye West; in Detroit, they brought out Eminem; and in Ohio, the one and only Lebron James. Considering that Atlanta is Future’s home town, its no surprise the city was blessed with two tour dates, and a chance to see four of the cities most popular artists join the stage.

During the first night in Atlanta, Drake and Future started things off with a bang by bringing out Gucci Mane, and 2 Chainz. With the bar set high, fans expected another big night from the What a Time to Be Alive rappers, and they did not disappoint. During the second night of their stop in Atlanta, Drake and Future welcomed Gucci Mane back to the stage, but this time accompanied by Young Thug, and Usher who performed their new single “No Limit”. With some of the cities biggest names all sharing one stage, the crowd could barely keep it together. Check out some of the reactions and videos below.

With Miami next in the Summer Sixteen schedule, all focus shifts to the sunshine state. Considering Rick Ross’s most recent comments regarding Drake and Meek Mill’s beef, its likely Drake and Future won’t be bringing the big man out, however that shouldn’t effect what’s sure to be another memorable two nights in Miami

“Big Rings” – Drake & Future

“Live From the Gutter” – Drake & Future

“Scholarships” – Drake & Future

The Rap Up: Episode No. 9

funny-donald-trump-jokes

FDT

Americans are trying to figure out what’s happening to their country because last week the worst of the worst happened. If you’ve been living under a rock for the past week, you will be surprised that Donald Trump is the new President Of the United States Of America. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? we’ll tell you why. Last Tuesday on Election Day, it was a stressful day for everyone watching but mostly Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. After hours of waiting to see who would win, Hillary Clinton calls Donald Trump to congratulate him on his win. This had America going crazy. Instantly after being elected riots started everywhere in the states. Hate crimes were worse than they have ever been. Schools were spray painting Muslims don’t belong, deport immigrants & one school in specific got a black doll and hung it. Trying to imply black people should die. Hip Hop especially was furious about the decision. Rapper YG right after Donald Trump won tweets “FDT TOUR IS BACK IN DENVER” Denver being a mostly white state who knew what could have happened, but the show went smoothly everything was good. All that we can do now is pray he does a good job running this country and pray that everyone is going to be okay.

Lil Wayne & the Roc?

No not Dwayne Johnson. Now, we’re not saying that collab wouldn’t be amazing, but this week we discussed the possibility of Lil Wayne signing to Roc Nation. As some of you may already know, the last couple years have not been pleasant to Lil Wayne, and it doesn’t appear to be getting better anytime soon. With the lawsuit concerning his highly anticipated album  Tha Carter 5in an almost frozen state, and his relationship with Birdman melting away, its not surprising to see Lil Wayne testing his options. Recently at Camp Flog Gnaw, Wayne performed “I’m Me” to which he changed the lyrics from “I’m a MF Cash Money Millionaire”  to ” I’m a MF Roc-a-fella Millionaire”, which understandably sparked rumors of Wayne possibly seeking a new deal with Jay Z’s Roc Nation. While this would be quite the transition for all involved, the potential for new Lil Wayne material, mentored by Jay Z, is a tantalizing prospect.

Belly of the Beast

Rapper Belly recently released Inzombia, the mixtape. The Ottawa native has been making waves in the Canadian music industry since 2008. For many Canadian rappers crossing the boarder is a final accomplishment in their career. The Juno Award winner recently moved to Los Angeles to reach a larger audience and push his music in a way he could have never done while living in Ottawa. Belly is one of the newest members of Jay Z’s Roc Nation label. Being signed to Jay has opened a lot of doors for the Ottawa native, he’s been blessed with features on his tape from various artists like Jadakiss, Ashanti, Future, Young Thug, etc. Hopefully there’s a lot more good news in store for Belly on the music side of things, he’s been active in the rap game for almost a decade now and he’s finally getting the respect as a rapper that he deserves.
