The Rap Up: Episode No. 18

More Life… More Waiting.

Despite Drake’s extensive catalog of heart melting love ballads, he’s pretty cruel when it comes to teasing release dates. Each of Drake’s most recent projects; What A Time To Be Alive, Views, and the short lived collaborative mixtape with Kanye West, were all punctuated by frustrating teasers, trolling, misdirection, or flat out heart break. As we all know, the Kanye collab never actually saw light. The case is very much the same with More Life. After a cryptic photo posted to Instagram by Drake, and a similarly misleading post by his father, fans were all but convinced More Life would see life this weekend. Without belaboring the point, the absence of More Life on my iPhone is still painfully clear. The release date is anyone’s guess at this point, however a Friday release would be logical. Regardless, More Life is on the precipice of being in our hands, and all reports point to it being well worth the wait.

Chance Gives Chicago Public Schools a Chance

Chance The Rapper held a press conference at a public school in Chicago to announce that he will be donating a million dollars to Chicago’s schools. Chance is exactly the person you can assume that will be that gracious to give back to the kids from the streets he came from. Chance is being an example for many artists from the city to give back. “Our kids should not be held hostage because of political positions”. For the kids, the kids are the future and with the current climate of the state Chicago is in right now there’s no one I’d rather see step up than a man of the people. Chance has been very active in the Chicago community, alongside Chicago native rappers like Common. It’s a good look to see Chance give back to those who the world has abandon or looked down upon because of their status.

The Rap Up: Episode No. 17

Don’t Meek This up Nicki

This week was interesting for a few reasons. Reading week of course, but for those outside campus, Remy Ma’s “Shether” diss track directed at Nicki Minaj was enough to get most people out of their seat. For those who follow the industry closely, the beef has been in the works for year’s however, due to Ma’s infamous incarceration tensions never broke. Fresh off a new album with Fat Joe, it seems Remy Ma is now coming for blood and Nicki Minaj seems to be in the crosshairs. Nicki has yet to respond directly but had some choice lines in her two most recent releases which most assume to be directed at Ma. A few other rappers have chimed in, including The Game who has tried dragging Meek Mill back into things. While we’re not exactly sure where this is going, it sure isn’t over yet.

 DJ Semtex Interviews Drake

Drake recently sat down with DJ Semtex, and discuss details about More Life, Meek Mill, Kanye West and many more. Drake spoke about the More Life process and progression of the album. Drake spoke with Semtex about the demise of relationships he had with Meek and Kanye and how there were o mending of ties. There were no specific dates on when the album will be released. Drake spoke with a lot of enthusiasm about his collaborations with UK artists, and how similar the London culture is similar to the Toronto culture when it comes to the slang and terminologies. There are no exact dates for the release of the album, but as fans eagerly wait there are a lot of anticipation as to it’s now what surprise release.

The Rap Up: Episode No. 16

“They say you gotta sell it to snatch the Grammy”

Well Chance, you proved them wrong. In case you missed this years Grammy celebrations, The Rap Up has you covered. Perhaps the biggest story of the night for the Hip-Hop community is that Chance the Rapper took home a total of three Grammy’s for “Best New Artist”, “Best Rap Album”, and “Best Rap Performance”. After a tumultuous year leading up to the event, with regards to major artists avoiding the ceremonies altogether, its clear the right decision was made. Additionally, even though Beyonce did not win “Album of The Year”, her incredible performance (while pregnant with twins we might add), and relationship with Adele stole the show. In fact, Adele broke her Grammy in half on stage so that she could share it with Beyonce, who she felt deserved the award just as much.

Big Sean drops “I Decided”

Big Sean came through last Thursday with the release of his newest studio album, I Decided. The project is laced with 14 tracks, and has features from Eminem, Jhene Aiko, The Dream, and Migos. Understandably, a lot of people have been debating the quality of Eminem’s feature, however we’ll let you be the judge of that. However, it is important to note that this is the first track Big Sean and Eminem have shared exclusively. Its also significant due to the fact both are at the moment Detroit’s most dangerous emcee’s. Overall the album seem’s to be well received by fans and even became America’s #1 album on Billboard this week.

The Rap Up: Episode No. 14

More Life

Drake has been teasing fans for several months now about his upcoming project More Life. Recently during a tour stop in Amsterdam, Drake told fans who were in attendance that they should indeed attend his next show on February 26th, which will be entirely different as More Life will be out by then. While there isn’t a set release date for the project, we can assume it will arrive sometime between now and February 26th. The project will also be released as an Apple Music playlist, which is an odd move but could give insight into what the project may entail. There have been rumors that the project is supposed to be a compliation album which leads us to believe the project/playlist may feature other artists than just Drake. Perhaps a few OVO tracks, a few from Skepta, 21 Savage and of course some new material from Drake. Whatever the case may be, we’re ready.

Migos Szn
Atlantas trio has had a heck of a month. With only 31 days into the new year, rap group The Migos have been the centre of attention. With their new album Culture just dropping the group is blowing up. Quavo, Offset and Takeoff just released their album which features Gucci Mane, Travis Scott DJ Khaled and 2 Chainz. The group first got the biggest co sign of their careers when Donald Glover got on stage to accept his award for the show “Atlanta” and shouted Migos out by saying their hit song that went platinum “Bad and Boujee” is the song of the year. After that their numbers just sky rocketed. There is a petition being passed around saying that Migos should replace Lady Gaga to perform at the half time show at the Super Bowl this upcoming Sunday. The trio then did a mini interview where they said since the best team in the NFL, the Atlanta Falcons are in the Super Bowl the Best trio in Atlanta deserve to perform. I don’t know about you guys, but I defiantly would sign that petition.

The Rap Up: Episode No. 13

After a brief hiatus, we’re back with our first episode of the semester!

Soulja Fool

Soulja Boy is 2016’s Donkey of the year. He has beefed with with a countless number of entertainers. He has been in altercations with Lil’ Yatchy, Quavo, and even Shia LeBouef. But the most recent and most entertaining beef of all has been with Chris Brown. This all began with Chris getting salty at Soulja for liking Chris’ ex girlfriend Karruche’s Instagram picture. Soulja Boy claimed that Breezy face timed him saying “stop liking my girls pictures, I’ll f*ck you up”. One small picture might be leading to the PPV fight of the decade. Soulja and Chris decided to settle their differences by having a fight in Dubai. The Crank Dat rapper managed to get Floyd Mayweather as his personal trainer for the fight and Chris got Iron Mike Tyson to train him. 50 Cent as usual has been instigating and adding gas to the fire by promoting the fight and even having a mini altercation with Soulja Boy on the side. Soulja Boy then reposts a picture of Browns daughter which made Brown very angry and threaten to kick his ass. This is by far going to be the best fight ever. Who do you guys have your money on?

I Don’t Wanna Hear About This Ever Again.

One of Hip-Hop’s last few power couples, have gone their separate ways…. or so we thought? Last month, rumors were all but confirmed that Nicki Minaj and Meek Mill had ended their relationship. It was reported that Nicki had finally found out about an alleged year long affair that Meek was having with a girl from Philadelphia by the name of Ahnee Baby. It’s rumored that Meek not only hooked up with Ahnee for the better part of a year, but also payed to help maintain her boutique, House of Beauty. What makes this confusing though is that TMZ recently reported that a source close to Nicki dosen’t believe the break-up was real and says Meek recently picked her up from the studio. Within the last few days however, Meek has deleted his IG account after allegedly hinting at a Nicki diss track, and was spotted hanging at Lenox mall in Atlanta with Keke Palmer. While the story still unfolds, we’re sure Drake is somewhere feeling just a tad satisfied.

Daryl ‘Taxstone’ Campbell

The East New York Hip-Hop personality and Podcaster has been very influential over the past two years and has made a name for himself with his Tax Season Podcast appearing on shows like Uncommon Sense. Taxstone is from the streets, as in he’s lived the life rappers glorify in their music. He’s had a few run ins with the law through out his life and did some jail time here and there. Tax has had his share of beefs, the most recent has been with rapper Troy Ave. Tax is a man of his word, based on the countless stories he has told about his time in the streets, there’s one thing you can take from that, he does not tolerate being disrespected. The feud with Troy Ave has been on going for a while, nothing became of the beef until late last year at a T.I.’s concert at Irving Plaza in New York where Troy Ave’s bodyguard, Ronald McPhatter was shot and killed, Troy Ave was also shot in the leg. Taxstone was arrested on Monday January 16, 2017 in connection to the shooting. The feds stated that the weapon that was used in the shooting had Tax’s DNA on it. Tax is currently being held without bail. It’s a sad situation to see someone who was on the verge of changing his life for the better get caught up in something so negative. Prayers up to the sky for Tax. #FeeTax

It’s Going to be a Cole Winter

King Cole has done is again!!! Damnnnn J. Cole back again with another Album. The is titled For Your Eyes Only. After a two-year hiatus, it is safe to say the J. Cole is back again to cause a lot of rumble with his next album. The album is set to release on December 9, 2016. Cole released a documentary that was exclusively on Tidal showing the process of a day in his life and how a regular day in the studio is like for him. In the documentary, Cole released two videos, “False Prophets” and “Everybody Dies”. The records have caused quite a stir in typical Cole fashion as he sits back and watch the reactions. The track list for the upcoming album was released last night with ten songs and there were no features on the album. Just another album to go platinum with without any features. Cole has proven over the years that he is lyrical and is not to be messed with on the mic. As the days goes by the anticipation for the album grows. Cole brings the style of old school hip hop to the new school crowd.

Awaken, My Haters

Childish Gambino dropped a brand new album this week, but unfortunately thanks to J. Cole, it has been slightly over shadowed. Gambino’s latest effort Awaken, My Love has been receiving mixed reviews. First and foremost, this is not a traditional Hip-Hop album,  which has caught quite a few people off guard. If you can manage to get over the fact there is no “single” or “bars”, it’s a bit easier to digest. The sound of the 11 track album has been described by fans as “1970’s heroin funk” (whatever that means), unapologetic acid-soul (again whatever that means), and Gambinos transition from Childish to Adultish Gambino. While artistic progression is always the moniker of a pure artist, this album is admittedly more difficult to digest than his previous works, and requires a more complex appreciation. Usually HotNewHipHop.com‘s comment section is nothing more than trolls and jokes however a user explained the our feelings of this album perfectly, “Album is not for everybody thats obvious. Some will f*** with it and some won’t. Me personally it’s not what I was hoping for but I like it for what it is.”
