The Rap Up: Episode No. 5

Are You Qualified?

What qualifications does a journalist need to ask Beanie Sigel a few questions regarding his involvement with the Meek Mill and Game “beef”? Beanie Sigel recently sat down with The Breakfast Club and was asked about his involvement with the Weak Mill and Game beef. If you’re not aware, Beanie Sigel contributed to the Weak Mill and Omelly beef towards Game. Sigel stated on Taxstone’s Podcast that he wrote parts of Weak and Omelly’s diss towards Game. Weak and his goons did not like that so Beanie Sigel admittedly got sucker punched at the Bad Boy concert in Philadelphia by one of Weak’s goons. But basically, Charlamagne questioned Beanie about his loyalty after he released two diss track towards Weak and all of the DC crew. Beanie Sigel is caught up in the hype of playing both sides when in reality no one is playing on his team. Beanie Sigel is looking lonely on these streets and desperate to say the least.

One More Thing to Buy Off Amazon

Another streaming service has entered the mix and it’s courtesy of Amazon. Its officially titled Amazon Music Unlimited and actually undercuts Spotify and Apple Music by a few dollars at 7.99 considering 10$/month which is the industry rate at the moment. Now we’re not saying Amazon Music Unlimited will but what the effects of its price point could prove to have significant effects on the industry of streaming services. However, lets assume for a second that the AMU library is actually quite comprehensive which means, if this service is successful enough, it could actually cut into the profits of the big streaming services. While this might not strike you as something inherently beneficial to you as a consumer, this competition could possibly lower the overall monthly cost to lower than 10$ in order for the big streaming services to maintain their client retention. Or at the very least, possibly offer some new promotions or free months as an incentive to stay. Either way, we win.

The Game V.s. Weak Mill

Meek Mill should honestly retire from hip hop and and go somewhere and chill. In all honesty, Weak is not made for beefs in hip hop. According to the Game, Weak Mill snitched on him regarding Sean Kingston getting robbed in the club in LA for his jewelry. Game reported on Instagram that he did not rob Sean Kingston. Game’s with Weak Mill is because he snitched on him, Game flowed through with a diss track to Weak titled “92 Bars” which definitely had some bars and totally annihilated Weak Mill. Meek obviously followed with a diss track of his own titled “OOOOUUU Remix” featuring Beanie Sigel and Omelly (the roadie).

Meek’s track wasn’t as good as Game’s but that was expected. Weak Mill is becoming the Ja Rule of today’s rap game as far as beef goes and his career is almost at its end. He has peaked and climax. I personally don’t think he can go back to being the old Meek Mill. Meek has had his run in hip hop, although it was short lived, he is the wife of Nicki Minaj, I mean that’s kind of a come up, I guess.

Kanye on the Gram

For some reason, two of the biggest and most influential people in the music industry simply refuse to create an account with Instagram. Of course I’m referring Jay Z and Kanye West. It appears Kanye has caved as a brand new and even ‘verified’ IG account has been recently discovered. At the moment there’s only one picture uploaded from the account and NO it’s not a warm smiling selfie. Instead, Kanye opted for a rather obscure picture depicting a scene from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1990 film, Total Recall (see below).

It’ll be interesting to see where this goes and if Mr. west is here to stay. Which makes this story slightly ironic considering his Wife and her siblings (Kim Kardashian & Kylie Jenner) have the most followers on Instagram in the world.

Birds In Waterloo Sing McKnight

Almost a full year later, fans now have Travis Scott’s second studio album, Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight, firmly in their hands. The album dropped September 2nd and has already surpassed sales expectations.

The sound of the album is best described as experimental layers of sound and acidic instrumentals that intertwine with raw, unpolished, and heavily filtered vocals that convey an enthusiasm that has come to be known only as Travis Scott.

The features aren’t too surprising, except for Kendrick Lamar, Andre 3000, and the absence of Justin Bieber. While that might sound like an odd combination, the two are actually quite close with each other and Bieber even appeared on his last album, Rodeoon one of the standout tracks.

The Rap Up: GK Nesso in The Building!

GK Nesso Interview & Freestyle

The Rap Up was blessed to have GK Nesso stop by and chop it up with us on our first episode of the year! We spent some time getting to know the man behind the mic, and among his influences (50 Cent & The Game), Top 5, upcoming projects and move, and his opinion on current industry trends, we also dived into what it takes for an amateur artist to really take it to the next level. GK Nesso also came through with an incredible freestyle, exchanging a few bars with host TJ Mroz! For the full interview and freestyle, head over to GK Nesso’s website (video to be uploaded soon).

For All My Wax Figurines That Know Me Best

If controversy and broken barriers are your thing, there’s solid chance your aware of the music video that sent the internet and those most opinionated, into a frenzy of ‘hate it’ or ‘love it’. The music video for “Famous”, a track off Kanye West’s most recent album The Life Of Pablo, was both highly criticized and praised for its avant-garde commentary on pop-culture. For those unaware, the video itself is simply the wax depiction of 12 famous celebrities lying next one another in bed, naked. In order of those depicted, the wax figures represent; George Bush, Anna Wintour (editor in chief at Vogue), Donald Trump, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Taylor Swift, Kanye West himself, Kim Kardashian, Ray J, Amber Rose, Caitlyn Jenner, and finally Bill Cosby. For obvious reasons, the choice of who was used and in what position was immensely controversial and uncomfortable to gaze upon. However, in another perspective it appears one of the greatest samplers in music, has this time around, sampled visuals from a famous work of art by Vincent Desiderios, titled “Sleep” which simultaneously functions as performative art due to the extra dimension in which this music video evokes. As a New York Times article points out, West can easily be compared to Andy Warhol as both artists heavily mirror the times through performative art and social commentary.

Gucci’s Home

Gucci Mane was a highly requested artist of the summer of ‘16 upon his release on May 26, 2016. While incarcerated, Gucci Mane released a few mixtapes with various artists, like Young Thug, Migos, Peewee Longway and Chief Keef. Was the buzz of Gucci Mane’s release all it was supposed to be; I mean everyone was happy he was home. But did Gucci put out any bangers for as long as he’s been out? “Back on Road” featuring Drake sounds like an average Drake record. Hopefully he continues to stay on his grind and stay in the studio. As far as the music goes Gucci has not put out anything “special”. With the appearance of Gucci Mane, you would think guys in prison eat well, Gucci Mane went to prison looking like a slob and came out looking like one of those Instagram fitness guys. Good to see he’s taking care of his body and hopefully he’s getting his mind right.

Back-to-Back Summers

It’s back-to-back for Drake, as he had another summer beef in 2016. However, this time the beef was with a much more accomplished rapper than Meek Mill. Drake got the attention of Joe Budden. It all began when 6 God dropped 4PM in Calabasas” which seemed like a song that directed shots towards P. Diddy (Puff Daddy/Diddy). However, Budden went on to state how the song had lyrics that were directed at himself instead. Budden proceeded to release Making A Murderer”, “Wake”, “Afraid” and “Just Because” all diss tracks meant for Drake. While Drizzy had no response for this, there seemed to be a subtle shot on his track with French Montana, “No Shopping”. Following these events, some kids decided to run up on Joe Budden’s house, but he chased them away. Drake had then followed these kids on Instagram which might be viewed as a questionable move. Budden went on to reveal some DM’s Drake had sent him recent to the time. While Joe Budden has constantly egged Drizzy on to respond with some hardcore rap bars, Drake hasn’t come through and I find it hard to believe Budden to continue his efforts, instead of focusing on making money.

The Rap Up: End of the Year!

What’s going on with Kyrie, Kehlani and PND?

As many of you may have recalled, Kehlani and Cleveland Cavaliers star point guard, Kyrie Irving, were in a relationship. Over the last week, an image surfaced on Party Next Door’s (Kehlani’s ex-boyfriend) instagram. The image included a hand that had the exact same tattooing that Kehlani does on the same hand. This photo was also taken in bed, firing up the rumours even more. While rumours ran rampant that Kyrie and Kehlani were still dating, the former was quick to clarify exactly what the situation was on his twitter feed. He provided clarity that him and Kehlani were not in fact dating at the time that Party Next Door posted the picture. Later that day, Kehlani posted a picture of herself hooked up to a UV packet while in a hospital bed, stating that she wasn’t cheating and that she had tried to end her life that day. Later, she thanked Party Next Door for everything he had done for her. While this situation is still very confusing, Kyrie handled it in a very mature matter, assuring that PND was handed the L and not him.

Meek Mill still taking L’s

While this may come as a surprise to some, many can expect Meek Mill to continue his losing streak that is his life. Meek, currently serving probation, reportedly ordered his crew members to go to a Footlocker that Quentin Miller was at and force him to admit that he was indeed a ghostwriter for Drake as well as issuing an apology to Meek for making him look like an idiot. Well, Miller refused and one of Meek’s henchmen knocked him out. Meek then went on Instagram and posted a photo of Russell Westbrook with the caption being ‘what?’. Meek has since proclaimed that he knows nothing about the attack and that he did nothing to contribute to the situation. Whatever the issue is, Meek is still taking L’s this year.

Drake has 2 songs leaked

Speaking of Meek, his arch rival Drake has had 2 songs from his upcoming album, Views from the 6, leaked. The first song, entitled Controlla, features reggae artist Popcaan. Controlla is more of a slow burner/reggae dance hall type of music. It’s similar to Drizzy’s song with RihannaWork. The second song is an electronic ballad entitled These Days. I personally don’t like it a lot and compared to something you’d hear in your grandma’s ’99 Lincoln sedan that still has a cassette tape player. I’m just excited for Views and hope that it’s 6God’s most lit album to date.

Drake the Culture Vulture?

For those of you who don’t know who Mo-G is, he is a Toronto rapper that’s accusing one of his local counterparts of biting his style. This person is none other than the 6 God himself, Drake. Mo-G laid into Drizzy and his manager, Oliver El-Khatib, on Instagram. He alleges Drake only offered him $500 for writing credits while also biting on some of Mo-G’s swag and dance moves. It’s unclear if there will be any resolution, but this isn’t the first time Drake has been accused of stealing someone’s flow. It’s been reported that Drizzy has stolen bits of style from The Weeknd and Puff Daddy. While I’m of those that believe 6 God is too smart to low-ball his peers like this, it’s worth noting that no matter what you put that man’s name on, you’re going to gain publicity. So maybe that’s all this is: a publicity stunt by Mo-G.

Metro Boomin Trusts Batman.

It’s becoming more and more obvious that If Metro Boomin dosen’t trust you, success probably isn’t in your near future. With the upcoming release of the blockbuster hollywood film Batman Vs. Superman (or as we like to say, Battle of the Orphans) quickly approaching, Ben Affleck has been doing some promotional interviews for the media. In his most recent interview, Afflack was asked if he thought Metro Boomin trusts Batman or Superman more, to which he replied Batman. It wasn’t long before young Metro caught wind of the comments and tweeted out to confirm he’s indeed a Batman fan and always has been. Is it too late to cast Metro Boomin as commissioner Gordan?

Young Thug… is on a horse.

Well it’s clear Young Thug is gearing up to release something, we’re just not sure what. All logic pointed to thug dropping Slime Season 3 on March 25th considering his SXSW promotion for the mixtape. If you missed it, several pallbearer’s marched down 6th street, Austin Texas, with a coffin repping bright red spray paint announcing that SS3 would be coming our way March 25th. Over here at The Rap Up we thought this was a pretty awesome way to promote an upcoming mixtape, that was of course until Thugger dropped a video days later promoting an upcoming tour starting the 25th too. Featuring a classic style theatre, Young Thug rides up to the doors rocking rose coloured glasses riding a horse with ruby slippers on. Yup you read that right. The only confusing thing however is that we can’t tell if we’re getting SS3, a Hitunes tour, or maybe both? Regardless WE WANT MORE HORSE INSPIRED ALBUM PROMOTION.

The Rap Up: Waves Never Die

Nicki & Meek sitting in a tree

Usually when we speak on Meek Mill, it’s because of his feuds with other rappers, however it’s pleasing this time around to hear Meek is taking some time from his twitter fingers to focus on his future. While it wasn’t exactly from the philly rapper’s mouth, his girlfriend and Hip-Hops baddest female MC, Nicki Minaj gave everyone an update on the couple’s situation. If you follow Nicki on any social media you’re probably aware that Meek has promised Nicki with 3 rings and so far has given her two. According to Nicki, it’s not official to her until that third ring finds a finger and also not the only milestone she hopes to reach in life within the near future. After the wedding, assuming things go to plan, Nicki revealed plans on entering motherhood and her excitement at the thought of holding her own child. While the rest us wait on wedding bells, Meek looks to resume recording music however that can’t happen without a judges approval, and its looking theres a lot of “waiting” to be done with these two.

Much like Dr. Frankenstein’s monster, The Life of Pablo is bigger than life, misunderstood and ALIVE. Yes, according to Kanye West T.L.O.P is a living breathing artistic expression that he plans to keep on updating. Recently Kanye edited “Wolves” back to its original version featuring Vic Mensa and Sia while also keeping Frank Ocean’s 30sec verse on the tail end (THANK GOD…or kanye?). As far as albums go, no other artists has or is attempting to utilize a music streaming medium to enhance, develop and keep fans coming back… Assuming you’re messing with the album, it’s sort of like your favourite painting, touching itself up from time to time. It seems with each passing week Kanye Fans are still excited about the possibility of something else arriving… We just aren’t quite sure if itll be a new Yeezy Bosst colour scheme, epic twitter rant, album, or another version of “Wolves”.
