The Rap Up: Calm Before the Storm

Wu-Tang’s Mystery Album

Wu-tang has a new album but unfortunately you can’t hear it, not for 88 years at least. Unless of course you’re the private art collector who purchased the album package for a reported “millions” of dollars. The actual number hasn’t been released however the contents of the album package have. Along with a hand carved nickel-silver case, a leather bound book containing the albums lyrics and a set of speakers worth $55k. What Wu-Tang is trying to do here is historic, no other artist has attempted this before, and the rarity of this album makes it priceless. This will no doubt be a fantastic story in 88 years when the project is finally able to be distributed. Who knows, maybe the best album of all time is out there right now in one lucky man’s hands.

Preach, Jadakiss, Preach

Jadakiss is one the realest rappers in the game, theres no questioning that and fresh of the release of his most recent album Top 5 Dead or Alive he gives us his top 5 rules to live by:

  1. Take care of your family – and I agree with this one, keep the ones who love you most comfortable, after all its because of them that you might be in the position you are.
  2. Put God First – I’m not a religious person at all, but whatever helps you get through the day and be a decent human being, all the more power to you.
  3. Save Money – I think this one is self explanatory, stay in your lane.
  4. Educate yourself – This is my favourite, the reality you experience everyday is founded on your knowledge of it. The more you know the more happy you may be.
  5. Pray – we all need a little hope now and again just be careful what you pray for.

Thanksgiving game-plan

There’s a lot of new material about to overwhelm you this weekend so let us try and help. The headline of this weekend looks to be Rihanna’s 8th studio album, ANTI, which should be not only be the best project of the weekend, but has the potential to surpass anything released this year. The next project that should be in your download cue is Ape Shit. This of course dependent on its release this weekend which hasn’t been confirmed but fans are gearing up regardless. The Hip-Hop community can’t get enough of Future and seeing as he might have one of the best producers in the industry working the boards on this mixtape, there is a huge upside. As your bandwidth limit for the month seemingly vanishes before your eyes don’t forget to cop Lil Wayne’s, No Ceilings 2, which will arrive tomorrow. Lil Wayne’s tendency to simply remix popular songs instead of creating his own is the biggest reason why we’re not downloading this first, however we’re thrilled for some new Wheezy regardless. Finally, 50 Cent’s The Kanan Tape should be the last thing you anxiously try to squeeze into the remaining space on your music device. From what we’ve heard of the singles leading up to its release, we’re expecting this project to be surprisingly strong.

We Know When That Hotline Bling

Seems like the music video for Drake’s ever popular summer jam “Hotline Bling”, took longer than it should have to drop but the reward far outweighs the negative. Sure, the music video is kind of cool, colourful and so on, but the one thing everyone is fixed on is the 6God’s dance moves. Twitter’s meme game is at an all-time high, and this was a free-throw. Who seems to love it most of all? Drizzy of course. He’s even uploaded some of his favourites to his Instagram encouraging the strange love, which we think is a very smart move. Drake hopes “Hotline Bling” will be his first single to reach #1 on the Billboard Top 100 despite a wave of placements already (more than the beetles, that’s right). The number #1 spot is currently being occupied by none-other than The Weeknd. Oprah’s looking at like Toronto like “And you get a W, and you get a W, and you get a W!”.

Shhh… It’s a Documentary

The Game has been let’s say, active in recent months? I mean, recording near 700 songs for your double disc album, interviews and promotion all over the country, and taking shots at Young Thug whenever he gets a breather seems to be a full schedule. The Documentary 2 and The Documentary 2.5 are now available for purchase and stream although Game is probably hoping you choose to purchase the two disc set. Despite being very solid projects with an all-star roster of features, both discs brought in “meh” first week sales combining for less than 150k. Perhaps this might be a lesson in quality over quantity.

The Rap Up: Your Weekly Hip-Hop Fix

Pusha T is on it!

It’s been almost two years since Pusha T’s last album and he knows fans are getting tired of waiting. Don’t worry though, Pusha says he’s been feverishly trying to finish his highly anticipated KING PUSH by the end of the month. That’s right! Pusha T wants you strolling to lecture with possibly Hip-Hop album of year in your back pocket.

Straight Outta Compton… To The Bank

First weekend sales are in for Straight Outta Compton, and it looks like $60.2 million worth of people are throwing up the West Side all over North America. With a historic box office opening weekend, Dr. Dre’s newest album Compton has done quite well itself boasting an impressive 280,000 copies falling short to only Kendrick Lamar and Drake.

Eenie Meenie Miney Mo, Catch a Tyga By The Toe

I know, I know, that was corny, but then again so is Tyga. With a new mixtape on the way set to release August 24th, Tyga looks to prove he’s worth more than his infamous relationship with Kylie Jenner. With rumors of Kylie learning to make music, this might be the perfect opportunity for a really interesting feature.

The Rap Up: All Eyes on Compton

The Rap Up: All Eyes on Compton

Dr. Dre has a new prescription for you.

This past Friday Dr. Dre came through with some news that shook the game up on a rictor-scale level. During the Doc’s new radio show through Beats 1 and Apple Music, he announced he had a secret album, finished and ready to be released. Um shut up and take my money? Yeah pretty much. Although some fans are taking some time to grieve over the official announcement that the blueprints for Dre’s long-awaited album Detox will never be, others are counting their blessings, downloading the album and popping in some headphones. Oh and did I mention instant classic?

No matter what day it is, I’m always waiting for the Weeknd…

While attempting to move quickly past that masterfully clever pun, it looks like there’s actually something to look forward to at the end of August instead of lectures, midterms and profs OH MY. The Weeknd has finally revealed the track-list for his second studio album, Beauty Behind the Maddness. This is truly awesome news as fans have been without a new full-length project for almost two years now, and even though there is only one feature, the beautiful Lana Del Rey, it should turn out to be a bonafide gem.

Drake Vs. Meek… Vs Nicki?

It’s been a few weeks since the 6 God blessed us with two of the greatest diss tracks all year, and since Meek took the biggest L of his career to date. Looming lawsuits, album refunds, and of course hurt feelings have all resulted for Meek Mill since this saga began a few weeks ago, and now it’s starting to look like this was all over Nicki Minaj and both rappers previous and current relationship with her. I guess multi-platinum selling artists can’t help but get “highschool” once and a while.

Blog Post #2

Drizzy x Meek: Round 2

Its round 2 ladies and gentleman, and Drake takes it in a unanimous decision. Don’t believe the hype? All the #backtoback Twitter memes will tell you different. Just days after dropping a rather lack-luster unofficial response track to Meek Mills recent twitter rant, Drake returns with a second diss track that Meek really wasn’t ready for. Appropriately titled “Back to Back” The 6God came through today with some heat and shook the game up in a way only a Canadian could. Meek has the number 1 album in the country right now, a world tour AND the sexiest female MC on his hip but he better watch his step before Drake steals his short-lived spotlight. Look for the 3rd round to kick off whenever Meek gets home from the studio with a diss track of his own, and you can bet it’s only a day or two from dropping.

50 Cent almost Scott Free?

Well it’s about time someone served Fif a little justice, too bad they didn’t do a great job. After originally seeking $20 million in damages for releasing her sextape, Lestonia Leviston will have to settle for $6 million instead. Now this might seem like a steep fine for most, but for an individual valued at close to $140 million last year by Forbes, 50 Cent got off rather easily. Thanks to some tricky bankruptcy clauses, a few white lies and a winning smile, the queens rapper looks to have escaped this situation fairly unscathed or scott free if you will.

Bye Bye Bobby Shmurda…

What should you not do after being incarcerated for a possible 25yr sentence? Get caught with a weapon and add another 7-12 years. Seems like common sense right? Well, apparently nobody ever shared this valuable information with Bobby Shmurda and now the young Brooklyn sensation might have just sealed his own fate. After being caught trying to pass Shmurda a home-made weapon during a recent visit, his girlfriend now face charges of her own while Shmurda faces additional ones. There was already a very small chance Shmurda would be released in time to recapture his relevancy and now things seem to be leaning dangerously towards “not a chance in hell”.

Birdman, Angie & the Interview.

Birdman’s recent interview with Angie Martinaz is best described as a steaming pile of “maybe they’ll fall for it?”. After a solid year of beef, altercations, legal feuds and public frustration on both ends, Birdman attempts to pass off his current situation with Lil’ Wayne as totally fine. But who knows? Maybe throwing bottles at Wayne during a performance, is how Birdman expresses his mutal respect? Or maybe Birdman’s recent involvement in an investigation involving a murder attempt on Wayne is forcing him to play nice. Either way, the Hip-Hop community isn’t buying this “it’s all good” notion and so we patiently wait for the next ridiculous update in this convoluted story.

The Rap Up: WE’RE BACK!

What’s up Radio Laurier! Coming at you with The Rap Ups first blog post this summer. It’s almost the end of July and summers unfortunately winding down but The Rap Up is keeping things at heat-wave levels with the hottest songs you need to be listening too, on a weekly basis. Here’s a run down of everything discussed on the show this week.

50 Cent… or 25 Cent?

A few weeks back 50 Cent shocked the Hip-Hop community by filing for (chapter 11) bankruptcy and things just seem to be getting worse for Fif. While we thought 50 might be just up to his usual tricks, finding a policy loop hole that was most likely going to benefit him in the long run, it looks like 50 Cent is nothing more than a window shopper. That’s right, according to the Queen’s rapper himself in a recent testimony regarding his situation with Rick Ross’s baby mama, most of his jewelry and cars are rented and must be returned at some point. WEAK. Now while there is still a good chance 50 Cent is worth more than his lawyer is claiming (only 4 million), it looks like Mr. Curtis Jackson may be stuck holding the biggest L this year in Hip-Hop as he scrambles to sweep this whole mess under the rug. Who knew someone could have a worse year than Birdman?!

Meek Mill a.k.a Mr. No Chill….

Well there’s no question people love Drake. A lot. But it looks like Drizzy may not be doing any shows in Philadelphia anytime soon. In an almost Gucci Mane fashion, Meek filled up everyone’s timeline earlier today with another classic rant. Who was the red dot on this time? Canada’s golden boy, Drizzy Drake, that’s who. Looks like Meek is a tiny bit sad Drake never supported his album through social media despite being on it, and according to Meek, Drake did not write his verse on R.I.C.O. himself. Nicki and Drake’s relationship was also briefly mentioned and while this is interesting considering the two have been on good terms since this incident, the rest of the hip-hop community looks to be eating it up with an even bigger side of “who cares”. Meek better find that chill button soon before Nicki catches him acting like a jealous high school hubby among other things.

The Nicki who cried “not fair”!

I’m not sure what hip-hop would feel like without Nicki Minaj complaining about how she’s treated in the industry, so of course when Nicki caught word that the VMA’s had snubbed both “Anaconda” and “Feeling Myself” Nicki wasn’t impressed and like her current boo, jumped on twitter to air the situation out. Of course, black culture, women’s body types and more was brought up and it took T-Swift of all people to come back with a tweet basically saying “CHILL”. We know Nicki won’t and that’s fine, but for the most part Nicki’s outburst was unprovoked and maybe, just maybe the VMA’s just didn’t mess with her music as much as she hoped, instead of another gender and/or race agenda. If she keeps it up, she’ll soon be right beside Kanye calling racism on the Grammys for not putting his seat in the front row.
