The Rap Up: Pre-Exams

Pusha For President

When it comes to labels, reading between the lines is everything. While label heads and your favourite artists may cram down your throat notions of “Everything is great over here, probably better than your label!”, and “Its All love, no drama, we a family!” it becomes quite clear when that family begins to fall apart and things are not in fact “all love”, much like the Lil Wayne and Cash Money situation. Although not without its faults, G.O.O.D Music has remained for the most part successful, intact since its inception by Kanye West in 2004, and home to a lot of extremely talented artists. It’s now been confirmed however that there is a new president of G.O.O.D Music, and who better than heavy hitter Pusha T who subsequently calls G.O.O.D home. After accepting the offer via phone conversation with Kanye, president Push will focus on manicuring the label and furthering its success from a business perspective. This totally makes sense considering Pusha T is one of the most calculated and intelligent artists in the entire industry, also Kanye has about a billion different things on his plate and we’re hoping here at The Rap Up that this shift of responsibility will give us Kanye’s upcoming album sooner than later.

Future does it better

There is not a single doubt that anyone comes close to Future in the mixtape game. Don’t get me wrong, it’s been a slow and steady rise to the top, but now that he’s here fans simply cannot get enough of his music. After blessing the hip-hop community an unprecedented five times this year, we now have word that Future is sitting on an additional nine projects. To be specific, that’s six albums and 3 mixtapes, fully completed and ready to go which is more material than most artists ever make in their entire career. Metro-Boomin also recently advised other artists not to try and keep up with Future and the speed at which he releases material, which we at The Rap Up agree with. Now let’s be real for second, we always want quality over quantity and not all of these projects will be winners but at the level of popularity that Future currently occupies, they may as well be.

Leaves by Snoop

While the brand sounds more like weed that’s been sponsored by Dr. Dre, we’re not kidding… or making a pun… seriously, Snoop Dogg has created his own line of Marijuana and it is indeed called Leaves By Snoop. Of course we’re not surprised by this one, and now that’s it’s here it almost seems idiotic to not have seen this coming. As more states in the US begin to legalize medicinal marijuana, untapped markets of the sticky icky have now become apparent, and like much of America and the hip-hop community, there’s no one we trust more to handle bud than the man from Long Beach who’s probably smoked everything possible, everywhere possible. Even the packaging looks extremely trendy and strongly resembles something you might buy in a place like Davids Tea (see featured image). Move over Diddy, Jay and Dre… we might have our next Hip-Hop Billionaire.

The Rap Up: Halloween 2015

Hip-Hop Halloween 2015

Student Loans… commitment… exams… Sorry didn’t mean to frighten you, but then again, who doesn’t love the excitement of Halloween? Your favourite artists would agree, and really brought their A-game this year. Schoolboy Q was a blunt, Jhene Aiko got her Audrey Hepburn on, Beyonce was Storm from X-men, Chris Brown redid Michael Jackson’s werewolf, Nicki Minaj was on point with her fairy god mother look, but by far, hands down, the best Halloween costume of 2015, and I think the internet and Future would strongly agree, is the unknown guy who made his own Gucci Flip-flop costume (see featured photo). After all, we thought it was a drought.

In Yeezy We Trust

That’s right, FINALLY we have an update. In similar fashion to how a chosen prophet announces the coming Jesus, Travis Scott has foretold the second coming of Yeezus. In a recent phone interview, Travis Scott told Hot 97 that Kanye West’s incredibly mysterious and highly anticipated upcoming album SWISH, was “coming very soon”. On top of that exciting proclamation, Scott also said that the album should not be slept on, and earlier in the year teased fans that it would be a game changer. Wow. That’s a lot of hype to live up to but if anyone knows what Kanye has in store, it would be his producing protégé Travis Scott. Last month Kanye also released two tracks on his SoundCloud profile, to which Travis Scott confirmed was legitimate and captioned a photo with “it begins” and another stating something that he and Kanye had been working on for years would soon surface. In a recent phone interview Kanye also added to the hype by describing the album as a “sonic painting”. Either way, Travis Scott and Kanye West need to stop playing with our hearts but then again, it’s kind of surprising we even got this warning. Caution, Yeezy season approaches.

Rider Demands

There’s no debate that Jay Z and Kanye West might be the biggest artists you may ever have in your city, however, have you ever wondered what they ask for when spending a few nights in the most luxurious hotel your city has to offer? Well for Mr. West it starts with; no cylindrical vases, a brand of speakers (Genelecs 1031a) that’s been discontinued for ten years, only black towels, Kashi Go Lean cereal, mint flavored dental floss, and finally thirteen bottles of alcohol totaling $3,200, three of those bottles being Paradis Hennessy. While this would be an absurd list of requests for the average individual, this is pretty much what we expected from Kanye and to be honest, we’re surprised it isn’t more ridiculous. As for Hov, he requests no vacuuming near his room, that none of the hotel staff ask for concert tickets lest they “avoid embarrassment”, that the hotel room temperature be set at 71 degrees, three $80 Mayan tuberose-scented candles, and finally one bottle of Ace of Spades champagne, and not be charged for it (which makes sense considering he owns the company). That actually isn’t too crazy considering Jay’s status, and we here at The Rap Up appreciate that Hov likes to set the mood, and saving a little cash is always a smart move. Maturity is a good look Mr. Carter.

Packed The Crowd!

Wuddduupp friends?! Hope all is well with your closing summer days. Summertime sadness. Isn’t that a song? Anyways, we had a super tight show this week. We played some wicked local music and talked about hip-hop live. Anything better? Didn’t think so.

We kicked things off with some realness. This past weekend, I attended OVO Fest in Toronto. In short, it’s Drake’s annual hip-hop festival in which he brings out a plethora of special guests and absolutely turns the city into a rap riot. It’s fun. Anyways, he performed a song I had previously deemed “just okay”. The song is called ‘Days in the East’ and at first listen, I wasn’t blown away. After having it grow on me for a few months, I started to like it a bit better, but still not in love. On Monday night at the Molson Ampitheatre, Drizzy performed the track and.. well.. it total changed my opinion. Having it performed live in the city that it’s about allowed me to find a deeper appreciation for the song. And guess what?! I have had it on repeat ever since. Funny enough, this happens a lot for me.

Tracks like ‘On Sight’ by Kanye, ‘Taylor Gang’ by Wiz Khalifa and ‘U Don’t Know’ by JayZ had me buggin’ at first listen but when seen live… they are now my favorite tracks. Has this ever happend to you guys? Let me know on Twitter but in the meantime, peep the video below of Jay-Z performing ‘U Don’t Know’. Just try and tell me that you aren’t considering it being your wedding song.

We switched gears a bit and dropped some fresh new music from a new hip-hop duo coming out of TDot. They are called 390waterTrash. Strange name, but strong songs. They have a unique 90s boombap, sample heavy sound that knocks thru any speakers. They are consistently dropping new music every few weeks and plan to hit the underground circuit real soon. They rap about everything from turning up, to girls, to recycling. True story. Check their track below and let us know what you think!

Well, that’s all from us. Check us out next week same time, same place.

Just Hits, No Misses!

Wuddduuppp friends?! Hope all is well and your end of semester celebrations are getting turnt. If they aren’t well, then, here is a little study break for you. We had to pre-record this one again because we were off celebrating all the awesome volunteers we have here at WLUSP. #WLUSPVAs

We kicked things off with some new singles from Drizzy Drake. He dropped two tracks entitled Draft Day and Days in the East. Both songs came out within a few days of eachother. Draft Day (ode to Johnny Manziel) kind takes shots back at Hov. He has linea about art, street cred and who’s better. Sounds like a diss track to me. Anyways, check out both tracks here and here. SZN!

In other news, Game beat up his wife, Khalifa still sucks, Hot97 has their own TV show and Vybz Kartel gets 25 to life. (check the cover photo)

Our REAL OR RATCHET  this week was kinda techy. I mean, we do live in Waterloo which is basically the technology capital of Canada. We found a list of technology geniuses and matched them to their rapper counterparts. The qualifications? Mood, age, success, gender, goals and overall alikeness. Check out the full list right here and prepare to be stumped. Ha!

The REALNESS was all gassed up. Here’s the deal. There is nothing else on this planet more gassed up than hip-hop music. Example? So with this whole Jay-Z vs. Drake beef, without any “entourages” gassing up either side, I highly doubt there would be any conflict at all. But no, of course both camps are egging on their frontmen to the point where we may never see another Jay and Drake song again. I mean, I’m all for competition but, c’mon. Rappers need to keep their hypemen/team in check. #DontGetGassed

Well, that’s it from us this week. WE PROMISE to be back live on air next week. Trust us, we’ve missed it a ton more than y’all. Ps: follow us on Twitter just so we know that it’s real. *@RLRapUp*

Risks & Rewards

Wuddduppp yall?! I hope your eggzam ulcers are under control because ours are growingandgrowingandgrowingandgrowingangwingangroiwnggrwwiaringw… but we took a little break from the books and brought yall the beats. Ha!

This past week it was Jigga man’s birthday and boy did he celebrate. Forget about all the champagne, celebs and Beyonce birthday suit for a sec and picture the goat ranking his own albums from best to worst. Crazy, right? Well, he did it. Check it out right here. He also offered a little commentary. ALSO, we had to pour out some of our beverages for the late great Pimp C who died this week 6 years ago. Pimp C was a pioneer for not only southern hip-hip but the whole culture in general. RIP Sweet Jones.

In other news, Drake and Kanye got shoe deals, Papoose hates Trinidad James, Fat Joe is out of jail, Mac Miller is dropping a new album and Sway still doesn’t have the answers.

REAL OR RATCHET this week was a little deeper than usual. We went over some of the biggest conspiracy theories in hip-hop history. These consist of everything from Tupac’s return, to racist clothing companies to Suge Knight’s murderous habits. We had to deemed a ton of them ratchet because, well, they are ridiculous. Anyways, check them out for yourselves right here and let us know what you think.

GLAYSHS GUILTY PLEASURE was that new new. For a while now, I’ve been using throwbacks for the GGP but this week Rozay blessed us with a banger. He dropped the remix to his newest single No Games. He added MMG counterparts Meek Mill and Wale to the already Future assisted track. The song REALLY knocks and all you exam-neglecters will love this one for your pre-draaank party. Check it out right here and as always, please turn up.

THE REALNESS this week was fairly strange. If you have been following us this semester, then you  might know that we haven’t always had the kindest words for Ja Rule. From the jail sentence to the curry recipe, Ja has had a rollercoaster year. BUT, that being said, we peeked into the past and found the goods. Do yall remember the catalogue of hits that Ja Rule had back in the early 2000s? His collabs with Ashanti and JLO were out of this world. The way he rapped/kinda sang was revolutionary at the time. Now, let’s look at the numbers. His first four albums went platinum within the same six months they were released. Wow. Who knew? I could keep going and going about how he used to be the man or I could let you reminisce with the classics. Check out our faves right here, here and here. he may not be on the charts right now but his raspy voice will forever he in our hearts.

The UNDERGROUND KING this week went to one of Ottawa’s finest. Battle rap phenom, Charron gets the crown this week. He has been killing the battle rap scene for a while now and has just recently broke into the music scene. In fact, this past March, Charron went down to BET’s 106 & Park Freestyle Friday competition and won the whole thing. The grand prize was $5000 and a spot in the Hip-Hop Awards Cypher. However, due to “complications” he was denied his chance to spit in the cypher… safe to say he wasn’t happy. He made a little diss track/verse about it. Check it out below. #CharronForBET

VERSE OF THE WEEK was competitive this week. For once. Ha! We went with the best autotuned verse. This verse had to be the best display of lyrical ability while using the auto tune device. I went with Lil Wayne’s verse on Demolition Part 1 and Kamo went with Kanye’s verse on Swagga Like Us. Thanks to guest judge and good friend Julian Staniewski, Kamo got the win. That brings the season to 5-4 for moi. I’m still ahead, buuuuut not by alot. Anyone got any tips for me? *gulp* Anyways, check the winning verse right here.

Anyways, that’s it from us this week. Make sure to tune in next week for our year end recap. We also have a little survey for yall to fill out. We want to know what you guys think was the best of the best in hip-hop this year. Fill it out right here ———> and let us know what yall think!

Peace, Love & Fat Joe First Meal Out

Shows/The RapUp

Wuddduupp friends?! If you were wondering where Brantford at wwwwhere Brantford at? Well they are in the building! That’s right, the big homie Matt Wright came thru for this semester’s first BRANTFORD TAKEOVER! He brought some pals, some bars and of course something for the ladies.

We kicked things off with a few headlines aka the classic RapUp rap sheet. Maaan these guys gotta stay outta prison. On the real though, Hova lost to Diddy on this year’s Forbes Cash Kings list. Matt thinks it’s all the Ciroc, we think it’s that French Montana tour money. HA! We also got a lil beef between GOOD Muisc’s Teyanna Taylor and bad gyal RiRi. Who will come out on top? Brantford says ratchet RiRi. Annnd just in case you’ve been living under a rock for this past week, you would know that BBC1’s Zane Lowe interviewed Mr. Kanye West and of course he snapped. Check it out here for yourself. WARNING: this video contains strong ego boosts.

Yall think we could go a full show and not talk about NWTS? Yall wrong. As I’m sure yall know, Drizzy Drake dropped his album this past week and boy is it smooth. Matt gave it a 9/10 which is strong BUT he said Take Care was better. *shots fired* A few fave tracks are Connect and Worst Behavior. Please stay tuned for a full album review and that’s word to Stunna yaaa know it!

Not only did Matt grace us with some Brantford flavor (pause) he also brought along a very special guest. Hailing all the way from Brampton but fresh off the plane from Miami, rapper Tizzy Wayans came thru to let us know what’s up. Don’t know who Tizzy is? Well let me learn yaaaaa. Tizzy grew up in Brampton spitting rhymes with a few fellas and has been killing it ever since. He recently was down in the MIA doing shows and press. Did I mention that he spit a hot 16 for French Montana? Well he did. Word to Big Sean and Kanye.

He’s got a new tape coming out entitled ‘SKURR’ which is looking to be dropped at the end of the month AND if yall want to see how he tuuuurns up live, make sure to check out his show with 2013 Freshman Kirko Bangz. Yall can also check out some of his music right here. And remember Success Over Stress. That’s the motto…

Well, that is it from us and Brantford. Make sure to check us out next week more regular scheduled programming buttt don’t fret because Brantford will be back next month. Just wait on it…
