Good Kid Good Friday: DAMN. by Kendrick Lamar

Technically, my time with Radio Laurier is over… but I couldn’t resist jumping at the opportunity to review DAMN. by the one and only Kendrick LamarAfter the release of his acclaimed concept album To Pimp a Butterfly in 2015 and accompanying piece Untitled Unmastered in 2016, I was convinced that Kendrick would be on a break.

Then, it happened. Out of nowhere, he dropped a track called, The Heart Part 4,” which indicated that a new album was coming. It cited April 7, but I had to patiently wait until Good Friday, April 14. It really was a good Friday. Little did I know that DAMN. would become my favourite of Kendrick’s albums to date.

Here are the five main reasons why I love it so much:

  1.  It isn’t just a rap album. Each track offers something in terms of genre.
  2.  Family matters come to the surface, which is reminiscent of 2012’s Good Kid M.A.A.D. City.
  3.  The collaborations with Rihanna and U2 are somewhat unexpected, yet incredible.
  4.  Kenny is fearless in his critiques on the government and the media, especially Fox News.
  5. Two words: production value.

He is the greatest rapper alive (sorry… still stuck on “The Heart Part 4”).

Kendrick has been acclaimed for his music videos, especially those coupled with tracks from To Pimp a Butterfly. I lost my mind when the video for “HUMBLE.” dropped, which is where the image at the very top of this post is from. If you haven’t seen it yet, click below.

Just when I thought that my 2017 was made, the DAMN. tour was announced. Cornrow Kenny will be going on tour with Travis Scott and Big Baby D.R.A.M. Of course, my boyfriend and I got pre-sale tickets for his show in Toronto on July 25. I’m definitely going to be writing a concert review, so stay tuned for that.

My favourite tracks off of DAMN. are as follows:

  1. DNA.
  2. FEAR.
  3. HUMBLE.
  5. YAH.

…but I love the whole thing.

Marc and Troy being sports guys.

Williams & Williams in the Morning – January 27, 2017

SPORTS SHOW, SPORTS GUYS. Thats us and that was the topic of the show this week. Some may ask, hey, what the hell do these guys know about sports? The answer is not much but we try hard. We did a little reminiscing about the glory days, and shared our favourite sports story. Shoutout Marc’s cousin Jimmy whose boys are taking on the New York Rangers this weekend up in Alaska, and shoutout legendary hockey coach Red Kelly for imparting some wisdom on Troy in peewee. Also shoutout Patrick Doodoocock, O-Lineman for the Cincinnati Bengals and Neil Kneecapison, catcher in the San Fransisco Giants farm system…two of the greatest completely real names in sports. We also named our favourite sports mascots, and the Philly Phanatic has to be #1, the guy is green. Hilarious.

As always we wrapped up with Friday’s Four* top sports cliches. They are:

  1. “Well yah know uh”
  2. “I’d like to thank God”
  3. “Get pucks deep and get to work”
  4. “The boys played hard we just didn’t get the bounces”

Classic phrases. Thanks again for tuning in on Radio Laurier and on Facebook Live, we won’t see you next weekend, because we’re on the radio, but you can hear us. Have a good weekend and party without the smoke.

It’s about that time of year when we all need a little inspiration. Who better to turn to than the master of inspiration, DJ Khaled. We were lucky enough to be graced with his presence today as he flew in from his latest show in Antarctica last night, and gave one of the best interviews in Williams & Williams history. We learned that his favourite pizza topping is artichokes, his favourite donut is Boston Cream, he would hate it if we only called him Khaled, and that he loves to say “grind”. Like way too much. Anyways, thanks DJ Khaled for taking the time to drop in. The theme of the show being inspiration station, we turned our Friday’s Five segment into a Friday’s Fifty, and rhymed off all the “_____ation station” phrases we could think of, and what they mean. For the sake of laziness, here’s our top 5:

5) Intoxication station – the bar

4) Procrastination station – the library

3) Documentation station – the border

2) Marination station – chicken in a bag, or the couch

1) Innovation Station – Thomas Edison’s basement

As always, thanks for tuning in and interacting and we hope that you’re feeling a little more inspired. Cheers to the weekend and remember, party without the smoke.

Week 09: After Class Summer Edition

DJ Deej was solo dolo in the studio, and she wanted to talk about PND3, the latest album from Mississauga-born artist Jahron Braithwaite, also known as PARTYNEXTDOOR. According to the review on Pitchfork, the album has gotten a rating of 7.4 out of 10, and is also said to be his “most confident” work to date. To read the entire review, click here.

PND penned Rihanna and Drake’s fiery summer track, Work, which can found on Rihanna‘s latest album titled ANTI. The track spent nine consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard Top 100. There is such incredible talent emerging out of Ontario consistently. DJ Deej has been listening to PARTYNEXTDOOR since the early days, and she still appreciates the new album. It does have a bit of a different feel, including more of an island vibe, but it is the perfect album for summer.

This week’s track list is as follows:

  1. Bring Me Your Love – Giraffage ft. THEA
  2. Playing For You – Joe Hertz ft. Bassette
  3. Vibe W/U – A. Chal
  4. Break It Down (Louis Futon Remix) – Logic ft. Jhene Aiko
  5. House Work -Jax Jones
  7. Right Now – PARTYNEXTDOOR

DJ Deej and DJ Stretch made it back to the studio. Deej is still on the wave that followed OVO Fest 2016 / Summer Sixteen Tour. She went on the Monday night and saw Roy Wood$, dvsn, Popcaan, French Montana, Rihanna, and Kanye West as the special guests. Future performed all of his best hits and features, and of course, Drake gave a performance only worthy of the 6IX. DJ Stretch is heading to his first wedding at legal drinking again this weekend. He suggested to the bride and groom that they use “Cold Water” by Major Lazer ft. Justin Bieber as their entrance song. Will they? We’ll find out.

The Rap Up: End of the Year!

What’s going on with Kyrie, Kehlani and PND?

As many of you may have recalled, Kehlani and Cleveland Cavaliers star point guard, Kyrie Irving, were in a relationship. Over the last week, an image surfaced on Party Next Door’s (Kehlani’s ex-boyfriend) instagram. The image included a hand that had the exact same tattooing that Kehlani does on the same hand. This photo was also taken in bed, firing up the rumours even more. While rumours ran rampant that Kyrie and Kehlani were still dating, the former was quick to clarify exactly what the situation was on his twitter feed. He provided clarity that him and Kehlani were not in fact dating at the time that Party Next Door posted the picture. Later that day, Kehlani posted a picture of herself hooked up to a UV packet while in a hospital bed, stating that she wasn’t cheating and that she had tried to end her life that day. Later, she thanked Party Next Door for everything he had done for her. While this situation is still very confusing, Kyrie handled it in a very mature matter, assuring that PND was handed the L and not him.

Meek Mill still taking L’s

While this may come as a surprise to some, many can expect Meek Mill to continue his losing streak that is his life. Meek, currently serving probation, reportedly ordered his crew members to go to a Footlocker that Quentin Miller was at and force him to admit that he was indeed a ghostwriter for Drake as well as issuing an apology to Meek for making him look like an idiot. Well, Miller refused and one of Meek’s henchmen knocked him out. Meek then went on Instagram and posted a photo of Russell Westbrook with the caption being ‘what?’. Meek has since proclaimed that he knows nothing about the attack and that he did nothing to contribute to the situation. Whatever the issue is, Meek is still taking L’s this year.

Drake has 2 songs leaked

Speaking of Meek, his arch rival Drake has had 2 songs from his upcoming album, Views from the 6, leaked. The first song, entitled Controlla, features reggae artist Popcaan. Controlla is more of a slow burner/reggae dance hall type of music. It’s similar to Drizzy’s song with RihannaWork. The second song is an electronic ballad entitled These Days. I personally don’t like it a lot and compared to something you’d hear in your grandma’s ’99 Lincoln sedan that still has a cassette tape player. I’m just excited for Views and hope that it’s 6God’s most lit album to date.
