The Morning After a Crazy Week

The Morning After a Crazy Week

Hello and good morning Golden Hawks! Hopefully you’ve had a fantastic week and no issues easing into those dreaded midterms. This week O$AP and Goldilocks had lots to talk about as it’s been a hectic week in world events as well as within the Laurier community.

The show started with a segment regarding the Miss Universe Pageant and this year’s winner, Iris Mittenaere from France! The returning host, Steve Harvey, had the chance to redeem himself successfully after announcing the wrong contestant as the winner in last years pageant. If you’re interested in reading more about the pageant, click here!

Next on the celebrity list is Justin Bieber, who made an appearance at this years NHL All-Stars competition. Apparently his coach for the big game was hockey idol Wayne Gretzky. O$AP and Goldilocks had to debate who would have been more excited to meet the other. The conclussion was definitely Bieber being more excited, even though it’s probably safe to assume Gretzky is a big pop fan!

And last on our celebrity list this week is Lady Gaga who will be performing at this year’s Superbowl, where the Patriots will face the Falcons. Though she’s quite the performer, it wasn’t clear whether or not your Morning After DJ’s agreed with her being this years pick for the biggest football game of the year. Hopefully she can keep up with the legendary entertainment of the Superbowl commercials and get the crowd even more pumped for the game.

In this weeks Laurier news, we send a well-deserved congratulations to the new Student Union President Kanwar Brar! Such a motivational and involved new president will surely show that the Golden Hawks are in good hands. Also coming this week is the voting for positions in the Laurier student publications. Between 7-10 PM this Wednesday February 1st, come enjoy some free food and good company in the Hawk’s nest right beside the Turret. Get involved and send out your votes! To read up on the candidates and other information regarding WLUSP, click here!

Lastly, Laurier sends it’s condolences to the victims of the Quebec mosque shootings on Sunday. To anyone involved and connected with the family’s affected we send our thoughts and prayers.

Have a lovely week Hawks! We’ll see you next Monday on the Morning After!

The Morning After – Celebrity Gossip

The Morning After – Celebrity Gossip

Good morning Laurier! Welcome back to another morning after with O$AP and Goldilocks on our second show of 2017. We hope these introductory course weeks are going smooth, especially if you’re part of the widespread Laurier Plague that every golden hawk seems to be dreading.

What could make that better? How about a morning full of Mac Miller’s latest album, The Devine Feminine, and some oh so expected talk about the Weeknd. This week was all about the gossip with some rumors of Abel Tesfaye from the Weeknd, allegedly getting involved with Justin Bieber’s ex-lover Selena Gomez. It looks like that unsubtle shout out from his song Party Monster off the new Starboy Album might have caught her attention! We don’t know for sure that anything is official, but it was an extra dramatic discovery to find out Abel’s previous girlfriend Bella Hadid unfollowed him on Instagram!

Of course, it wouldn’t be a normal Monday Morning After if The Weeknd didn’t get his share of discussion time. This week’s talk was about the expectations of the awaited Starboy album, and the not so expected results (sorry fans). With all that advertising, thousands of banners wherever you went, and pop-up ads on every piece of technology you own, it just doesn’t seem to be hitting the bar that his previous album Beauty Behind the Madness set. Goldilocks and O$AP seem to agree quite clearly this time that they had more expectations for this new album. It’s still early though and they have plenty of fan faith in the super star.

With this week’s focus on Mac Miller’s album it would only be right to talk a little gossip about him. Of course, his relations with Ariana Grande need to be brought up after playing songs like My Favourite Part and The Way, which, for those who don’t know, are two songs that the lover-artists have collaborated on together. Goldilocks wasn’t a fan of either until she heard The Way, and O$AP had to admit his gravitating appreciation for Ariana’s talented voice and singing skills. If you want to check out either of the songs just click on the links below! Let us know what you think and which artist you like better.

To end the week let’s all get involved with the Laurier student elections, which you’ll be able to hear all about this week on Radio Laurier. Make sure to stay tuned to your favourite shows and hear all about the elections, and be sure to check out the Interview this Tuesday morning January 17, 2017!

Make sure to have a stellar week Golden Hawks! Good luck getting over those colds and flus, and don’t fall too far behind. We’ll see you next week!

The Rap Up: Episode No. 8

Drake, Kanye… do something.

Yesterday Drake successfully reignited the collaboration rumors surrounding himself and Kanye West. During the summer, both artists promised a joint project, however since then, the only thing that has been released is a billboard (see above). The billboard in question only had one line of text which reads “Calabasas is the new Abu Dhabi”. This is interesting as it seems Drake has further referenced the billboard, as the picture uploaded is one of Drake and Ye with the caption “There goes the neighborhood”. It wasn’t until Scooter Braun, manager of Kanye and Justin Bieber, commented on Drakes pic with “it begins…”, that gave this update a serious amount of legitimacy. Braun has never been one for personal publicity stunts, which begs the question; why would he comment what he did if something wasn’t about to begin. Could we be days, perhaps hours from a surprise release?

Black America Again

Black America Againwas released on November 4, 2016. Black America Again is Common’s eleventh studio album. The album is a politically charged album that focuses on the current issues that’s taking place in the United States. Common has always been for the people and about the people since the beginning of his career. Common is very active in the African American community, he has used his voice to speak to the people and influence the youth in a positive way. The Chicago native has worked closely with President Obama who is also from Chicago on a number of programs designed to keep young African American men out of trouble and steer them in a positive direction. The release of the album couldn’t have been at a better time. The album speaks for the people without a voice, cries out for the oppress. Black America Again is for justice, a new light, a chance to start over and a better America for all.

Lil Wayne, Big Controversey

This weekend Atlanta rapper T.I. goes off on Lil’ Wayne over his interview on nightlife. In the interview Lil Wayne stated that he did not have any involvement in the “Black Lives Matters” movement. Wayne said that he doesn’t care about what doesn’t involve him. This pissed off T.I. which led to a rant later on Instagram. He told Lil Wayne that he is a disgrace to his family and that he needs to stop whatever BS he’s on and to open his eyes and see what’s going on around him. Later that night Wayne tweets “Fk ya”. Directed to whom? We don’t know. Many say that was a fire at Tip. Was T.I.’s Instagram post too much? If he is claiming that they are like brothers and that their families are family then why would he go out and throw Wayne under the bus? He could have simply called him and shared his knowledge but he decided to get angry over social media.

DJ Deej, DJ Winks, and DJ Nix were in the studio for some pre-Election Day partying. Although the impending U.S. election dominated the discussion, the trio addressed a lot of grievances that they have with other things going on in society.

  1. Mariah Carey performed at the opening of a Hudson’s Bay store in Toronto. She sang two Christmas songs to the monetary tune of $1 million. PARDON? The trio agreed that there are a great deal of social issues that need to be addressed and that money should be better allocated. Safe drug use spaces and childrens’ charities are noteworthy, especially at this time of year.
  2.  Christmas is just around the corner (well, kind of). The decorations are up already less than a week after Halloween. What about Remembrance Day? What about other holidays? We discussed that retail spaces should be left alone during Remembrance Day as a sign of respect for those who gave their lives, and who continue to do so.
  3. Post Malone is rumoured to be dropping a mixtape very soon… featuring no new material. DJ Winks is stoked for the release of the compilation, but Nix and Deej are wanting new tracks. A review is pending.
  4. Justin Bieber was spotted in the Kitchener-Waterloo area as recently as last week. There is video footage that Nix’s friend posted, and we saw the pop singer being able to walk freely without being mobbed by fans. Here in Canada, we seem to have more respect for those who have made their claim to fame. Unlike in America…
  5. …where the Federal election of either Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump is looming. The vibe in the studio was unanimous; we are on Team Hillary. Sure, both candidates have been associated with immorality in several contexts, but Hillary is surely the more fitting and experienced candidate.

This week’s track list is as follows:

  2. MOSH – Eminem
  3. Monica Lewinsky – G-Eazy ft. Skizzy Mars & KYLE

DJ Nix was in NY, but DJ Deej and DJ Winks took to the studio last night. It was a day of nostalgia as Aubrey “Drake” Graham turned 30 years old. DJ Deej reflected on listening to tracks off of So Far Gone when she was 14 years old, and remarked that one of her favourite albums is 2012’s Take Care. DJ Winks did not have a favourite, but really enjoys this year’s Views. Both agree that the mixtape If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late is also well done, especially when compared to the joint tape with Future titled What A Time To Be Alive. The Toronto-born artist released three new tracks on his famed OVOSound Radio, episode 32. There are rumours of a mixtape to be dropping in December, entitled More Life.

In entertainment news, DJ Winks brought forth yet another concert incident with Justin BieberThe 22-year-old Canadian pop star left in the middle of his set in Manchester last Friday due to upset over fans screaming and cheering during the breaks in Bieber’s performance. Justin Bieber has been quoted as saying, “I don’t think it’s necessary when I’m trying to say something and you guys are screaming,” (Sky News). DJ Deej and DJ Stretch were both in the studio for the first time in this school year. He may have been absent, but DJ Stretch has been putting in work. He provided a review of Travi$ Scott‘s latest album, Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight. Deej clarified that “McKnight” is, in fact, an as allusion to R&B artist, Brian McKnight. He also appears in Scott’s first music video for the album. The album has many features from Kendrick Lamar, to Justin Bieber. Both of these artists have been in the habit of featuring on tracks lately. Lamar has worked with Danny Brown and Sia, while Bieber has worked with DJ Snake and Major Lazer.
