DJs Deej, Winks, and Nix have all had a chance to listen to Starboy by The WeekndDeej does not hate it by any means, but her co-hosts certainly enjoy the album more than they do. Deej is a fan of the vocal ability, but found it to be too easily listening compared to the complexity of his past work. Winks loves it overall, but he feels like there are some tracks that could have been omitted, such as the “Stargirl Interlude” featuring Lana Del Rey. Nix also loves it, but she feels as though she hasn’t taken it in over the course of enough time, or in enough different settings.

Leading up to the album, DJ Winks brought the short film M A N I A to the attention of the ladies. It is the visul component that accompanies Starboy and all of the DJs agree that it was really well done. In case you missed it, watch it here:

Without revealing too much, DJ Nix spoke about the Netflix return of The Gilmore Girls. The special consists of four episodes that answer many of the unanswered questions that the show (originally running from 2000-2007) left up in the air. She also took over the @radiolaurier Snapchat and brought everyone along for the ride through her crazy, caffeine-filled Monday. She did a fantastic job and got her fellow DJs in on the action. This week’s track list is as follows:

Week 10: November 21, 2016

DJ Deej, DJ Winks, and DJ Nix had a great deal to say following a whirlwind weekend in music – and otherwise. America never fails to disappoint us, but Canada is also holdings its own. Want to know what we mean? Keep reading.

Kanye West has certainly made a spectacle of himself (well, more than usual). He left his latest Saint Pablo Tour show after fifteen minutes of ranting. He said that he would’ve voted for Donald Trump. Surprisingly, our grievance is not with his political views, but with his need to share them without having exercised his democratic right to vote. However, in a surprising twist of events, West was hospitalized in Los Angeles after cancelling the remaining dates of his tour, and is being held for observation. The Dakota Access Pipeline has been a pressing issue, and escalated way out of control last night. One lone civilian named Kevin Gilbertt shared a live feed on Facebook of the events unfolding before his eyes. He received instantaneous attention, and his feed was disrupted as backlash. Former U.S. Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders shared the feed, and appealed to President Barack Obama to help. The authorities doused unarmed protestors with tear gas, some so violently that they lost control of their bodily functions. If you are interested in viewing some of Kevin’s feed, click here.

Drake, the 6God himself, was nominated for thirteen American Music Awards. The Toronto-born rap artist took him four of his awards, including one for this year’s albums Views. To top it all off, @champagnepapi debuted his Apple Music campaign on his Instagram page, and it all over every social media platform you can think of. ICYMI, see below:

Week 09: November 14, 2016

The trio of DJ Deej, DJ Winks, and DJ Nix were in the studio last night with lots to talk about. All of the topics were different, but it all came full circle in the end.

On a whim, DJ Winks made his way to London, Ontario for the 109th Yates Cup. The Laurier Men’s Football Team have not played for the cup since 2006, and the win was incredible. Although unable to attend, DJ Deej watched some game on CHCH, and DJ Nix followed on the @radiolaurier snapchat feed. They all agree that the event is something that we can all be proud of as members of the Laurier community, whether we are football fans or not.

Belly and Juicy J are going on tour in January. Belly is a beloved Canadian artist, and the three agree that Juicy J is a hype feature artist, but none are thinking about grabbing tickets to the shows. Belly used to be kind of under the radar, but since his fairly recent label change and the release of his latest mixtape Up For Days, the star is making waves. Earlier this year in May, Belly and The Weeknd (whose album Starboy is dropping November 25th, cancelled their appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel Show, since Donald Trump was also going to be present; Belly is Muslim.

Speaking of Donald Trump (of course), it has been a week since his election in the good ol’ U.S. of A. The DJs are still feeling ways, but are hoping that his acceptance speech will be a sign of what is to come following his first 100 days. Despite certain grievances, we must still give him a chance. Frankly, we have no choice. There is such an overkill of Trump material in mass media at the moment, but the Barack Obama and Joe Biden memes are keeping it light and refreshing. Their friendship is one to be jealous of, that’s for sure. How else would they catch them sharing so many moments? Can we say “bromance?” Totally. Thinking forward, we’re hoping for a joint Presidential team of Kanye West and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Why not, right?

On Complex, pictures from the anticipated Camp Flog Gnaw performance surfaced. Tyler, the Creator was joined by many of the original members of OFWGKTA (a.k.a. Odd Future), as well as Erykah Badu. See the @complex instagram, and Tyler in our feature image.

On December 9th, Apple Music will issue the documentary titled 808, about the Roland TR-808 drum machine that changed electronic music – and all music – forever. It was created in the 1980s, and has not lost its ground or popularity since. The documentary will feature stars like Questlove of The Roots and Pharrell Williams. Also great in the 1980s was a lot of the music from the Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy, which will see its follow-up released next summer. That was a decent segue (?)

This week’s track list is as follows:

  1. Me and Your Mama – Childish Gambino
  2. Don’t Be Shy – Belly ft. Nina Sky
  3. Sorry – Justin Bieber
  4. Hooked on a Feeling – Blue Suede
  5. Sneakin’ – Drake ft. 21 Savage
  6. Bad and Bougee – Migos ft. Lil’ Uzi Vert
  7. Lovesick (Remix) – Mura Masa ft. A$AP Rocky
  8. Dancin’ (Krono Remix) – Aaron Smith

Week 08: November 7, 2016

DJ Deej, DJ Winks, and DJ Nix were in the studio for some pre-Election Day partying. Although the impending U.S. election dominated the discussion, the trio addressed a lot of grievances that they have with other things going on in society.

  1. Mariah Carey performed at the opening of a Hudson’s Bay store in Toronto. She sang two Christmas songs to the monetary tune of $1 million. PARDON? The trio agreed that there are a great deal of social issues that need to be addressed and that money should be better allocated. Safe drug use spaces and childrens’ charities are noteworthy, especially at this time of year.
  2.  Christmas is just around the corner (well, kind of). The decorations are up already less than a week after Halloween. What about Remembrance Day? What about other holidays? We discussed that retail spaces should be left alone during Remembrance Day as a sign of respect for those who gave their lives, and who continue to do so.
  3. Post Malone is rumoured to be dropping a mixtape very soon… featuring no new material. DJ Winks is stoked for the release of the compilation, but Nix and Deej are wanting new tracks. A review is pending.
  4. Justin Bieber was spotted in the Kitchener-Waterloo area as recently as last week. There is video footage that Nix’s friend posted, and we saw the pop singer being able to walk freely without being mobbed by fans. Here in Canada, we seem to have more respect for those who have made their claim to fame. Unlike in America…
  5. …where the Federal election of either Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump is looming. The vibe in the studio was unanimous; we are on Team Hillary. Sure, both candidates have been associated with immorality in several contexts, but Hillary is surely the more fitting and experienced candidate.

This week’s track list is as follows:

  1. Donald Trump – Mac Miller
  2. MOSH – Eminem
  3. Monica Lewinsky – G-Eazy ft. Skizzy Mars & KYLE
  4. American Idiot – Green Day
  5. Congratulations – Post Malone
  6. Lost in the World – Kanye West ft. Bon Inver
  7. Terrorist Threats – Ab-Soul ft. Danny Brown and Jhene Aiko
  8. F**k Donald Trump Pt. 2 – YG ft. G-Eazy and Macklemore
  9. What’s Going On? – Marvin Gaye
  10. State Run Radio – Lupe Fiasco ft. Matt Mahaffey

A very Happy Halloween to all from DJ Deej, DJ Winks, and DJ Nix! Things got a little bit spooky in the studio via some of the tracks played, and they discussed their Halloween outfits from over the course of the weekend.

Lots is happening in terms of music, as always. The Weeknd announced via Twitter that he will be moving forward with a tour in 2017. The tour is called the Legend of the Fall World Tour. At present, there is only one Toronto date listed, which is causing a great deal for fans of the Scarborough native.

Luckily, Kanye West will be returning to the Air Canada Centre in Toronto for a third Saint Pablo Tour performance. The show will take place on December 18th, 2016. What a way to celebrate if you happen to be finished finals by then!

DJ Nix was in NY, but DJ Deej and DJ Winks took to the studio last night. It was a day of nostalgia as Aubrey “Drake” Graham turned 30 years old. DJ Deej reflected on listening to tracks off of So Far Gone when she was 14 years old, and remarked that one of her favourite albums is 2012’s Take Care. DJ Winks did not have a favourite, but really enjoys this year’s Views. Both agree that the mixtape If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late is also well done, especially when compared to the joint tape with Future titled What A Time To Be Alive. The Toronto-born artist released three new tracks on his famed OVOSound Radio, episode 32. There are rumours of a mixtape to be dropping in December, entitled More Life.

In entertainment news, DJ Winks brought forth yet another concert incident with Justin BieberThe 22-year-old Canadian pop star left in the middle of his set in Manchester last Friday due to upset over fans screaming and cheering during the breaks in Bieber’s performance. Justin Bieber has been quoted as saying, “I don’t think it’s necessary when I’m trying to say something and you guys are screaming,” (Sky News).
