The Morning After More Life

This week, DJ Goldilocks and DJ O$AP began saying their goodbyes to Radio Laurier and their listeners for this school year. Crazy to think how quickly the time’s passed…but as sad as it is to say goodbye to this year, they hoped their playlist of the morning gave you More Life.

That’s right, DJ Goldilocks and DJ O$AP jammed out this morning to Drake’s newly-released album, More Life. They discussed the album’s track list and some of the featured artists.

Currently, their favourite tracks are: Ice Melts feat. Young Thug (DJ O$AP’s choice), and Get It Together (DJ Goldilocks’ choice). They made special mention of the songs Passionfruit and Gyalchester. They also compared the similar beats to some of the songs in More Life to that of Drake’s last album, Views. Could there have been some inspiration stemming from the popularity of One Dance to influence Passionfruit?

There were a few interludes on this album, which was more of a miss for these DJ’s. O$SAP and Goldilocks agreed that the interlude with Drake’s mother on the phone seems to be an overdone feature that many rap artists are including on their recent albums, for example Mac Miller in the Divine Feminine.

Drake really impressed the DJ’s with some of his featured artists, especially Young Thug! Young Thug is one of O$AP’s favourite rappers, and thinks he is one of the most underrated rappers.

If you want to hear more of Young Thug’s music to see for yourself, here’s a few of his suggestions:

Track List (all from Drake’s album, More Life):

  • Passionfruit
  • Madiba Riddim
  • Blem
  • 4422 (feat. Sampha)
  • Ice Melts (feat. Young Thug)
  • Get It Together
  • Gyalchester
  • Glow
  • Fake Love

The Morning After – Celebrity Gossip

The Morning After – Celebrity Gossip

Good morning Laurier! Welcome back to another morning after with O$AP and Goldilocks on our second show of 2017. We hope these introductory course weeks are going smooth, especially if you’re part of the widespread Laurier Plague that every golden hawk seems to be dreading.

What could make that better? How about a morning full of Mac Miller’s latest album, The Devine Feminine, and some oh so expected talk about the Weeknd. This week was all about the gossip with some rumors of Abel Tesfaye from the Weeknd, allegedly getting involved with Justin Bieber’s ex-lover Selena Gomez. It looks like that unsubtle shout out from his song Party Monster off the new Starboy Album might have caught her attention! We don’t know for sure that anything is official, but it was an extra dramatic discovery to find out Abel’s previous girlfriend Bella Hadid unfollowed him on Instagram!

Of course, it wouldn’t be a normal Monday Morning After if The Weeknd didn’t get his share of discussion time. This week’s talk was about the expectations of the awaited Starboy album, and the not so expected results (sorry fans). With all that advertising, thousands of banners wherever you went, and pop-up ads on every piece of technology you own, it just doesn’t seem to be hitting the bar that his previous album Beauty Behind the Madness set. Goldilocks and O$AP seem to agree quite clearly this time that they had more expectations for this new album. It’s still early though and they have plenty of fan faith in the super star.

With this week’s focus on Mac Miller’s album it would only be right to talk a little gossip about him. Of course, his relations with Ariana Grande need to be brought up after playing songs like My Favourite Part and The Way, which, for those who don’t know, are two songs that the lover-artists have collaborated on together. Goldilocks wasn’t a fan of either until she heard The Way, and O$AP had to admit his gravitating appreciation for Ariana’s talented voice and singing skills. If you want to check out either of the songs just click on the links below! Let us know what you think and which artist you like better.

To end the week let’s all get involved with the Laurier student elections, which you’ll be able to hear all about this week on Radio Laurier. Make sure to stay tuned to your favourite shows and hear all about the elections, and be sure to check out the Interview this Tuesday morning January 17, 2017!

Make sure to have a stellar week Golden Hawks! Good luck getting over those colds and flus, and don’t fall too far behind. We’ll see you next week!

Song List:

Congratulations (feat. Bilal)

Dang! (feat. Anderson .Paak)

Planet God Damn (feat. Njomza)

We (feat. CeeLo Green)

My Favourite Part (feat. Ariana Grande)

Back Up In This Thaaang, It’s A Go!

Wuddduuppp friends?! Got tans yet? Us neither. But who cares because WE’RE BACK BABY! I know yall were bugging out because we took a little hiadus for a few weeks but no worries. We are back in full swing with a ton of stuff to cover. Hip-hop has been busy this May. Sooooo where do we start?

Well, for starters, Mac Miller dropped a new called Faces. Not only was it super dope but it was one of Mac’s more well rounded projects. Filled with introspective tracks, bangers and just some weird ‘Burgh shit. Check out a few of our faves right here and here. Most dope!

In other news, KimYe tied the knot, G-Unit might be reuniting and Drake is dropping more singles than rappers at KOD.

Instead of the usual segments, we had a bangin’ interview with Toronto DJ Big Jacks (hence the cover photo). Jacks has been getting busy on the ones and twos ever since he did college radio days way back. He started DJing bigger and bigger events which brings him to today. These days Jacks is curating playlists for Aritzia while still keeping it hip hop. His mixes are seamlessly put together by layering a fitting instrumental with classic lyrics. We talked about the current hip-hop scene in Toronto, DJing as a whole and who’s hot in these TDot streets. And of course; we played some music. It’s good great trill. But don’t take it from us, check out his mixes right here. You won’t regret it.

Anyways, make sure to catch us from 9-10pm every Wednesday night this summer. Oh yeah, we still play requests, so like, hit us up.

Yall Gon Learn Today!

Wuddduupp yall?! Hope everyone is having a good reading  sleeping week and such. Yall know we’re over here keeping it all the way real. We had a few technical difficulties to start but we bounced right back and gave yall some of that classic Kamo and ScottyG RapUp sounds.

We kicked things off with a new Mac Miller track called ‘Diablo’. Sounds like a throw away that didn’t make WMWTSO but anyways you slice it, its got some nice flow + bars. Lines like “I’m poppin like a kernel, reading Justin Bieber’s journal” make yall sucka MCs take notes. Check it out right here.

In other news, Kanye is ranting again, Drake is beefing with a magazine, The College Dropout turned 10 and Dipset is getting that much closer to reconnect for a tour/album. Wooooo *Rick Flare voice*

REAL OR RATCHET was a little unorthodox this time around. Instead of giving a list the yay or nay, I read off a list of rappers that have graduated from college and had Kamo guess which major they walked out with. Some of them were pretty interesting. For example, Remy Ma is a certified electrical engineer and Rick Ross graduated with a degree in criminal justice. Weird, right? Anyways, Kamo got 3-26 right. Think you can do better? Check the list right here and let us know how you did! College educated, she graduated…

GLAYSH’S GUILTY PLEASURE came from the originator of the segment. Mr. Rozay is gearing up to drop a new album in March and he recently leaked his track with Jeezy to build a little more hype. Annnd man is this song hype. It’s called ‘War Ready’ and yall already know MikeWillMadeIt. Give errrr a quick listen right below for the full turn up effect. Unnnghhhhhh

THE REALNESS was a little bit of an oxymoron. If you’ve been rocking with us for a while, you’d know that we usually give Nicki Minaj a hard time. She lets us down day in and day out with these teeny-bopper radio hits, soo yes, Nicki can miss us with that. BUT the Young Money mistress has been giving us bars-galore as of late. She recently freestyled over PTAF’s ‘Boss Ass Bitch’ beat and Young Thug’s ‘Danny Glover’ beat. Wanna know the one thing they have in common? Punchlines and aggression. That’s right. I said it. We are sometimes too quick to dismiss Nicki’s lyrical abilities because she is making radio hit garbage. Anyways, check out our podcast below and take in this week’s bad gyal Realness.

VERSE OF THE WEEK was Valentine’s Day esque. In the past we’ve gone head to head with ‘Sexiest Verse’ and most ‘Romantic Verse’ BUT this week we took it a little deeper. *Pause* We thought we’d see who could come with the best verse to make love to. You heard me. This verse would have to get both parties in the mood to get down and duuurty. I chose Drake’s verse off Robin Thicke’s ‘Teach You A Lesson’ and Kamo chose Drake’s second verse off ‘Fancy’. Winner? It was tie. Therefore both are deemed “smashable”.

Well, that’s all from us this week. Check us out on the 26th as we will give giving you more from the world of rap music. Make sure to join the conversation of Twitter by following us right here —-> @RLRapUp

Yall Can Miss Me With That

Wudduuupp friends?! Hope yall had a good break and Santa was good to you cause lord knows he treated us well. Can you pause that? Whatever. Anyways, we are back in the building and ready for a new semester. We haven’t been hitting too too many classes but we definitely cooked up a nice little show for yall this week.

If you are wondering why ATL’s finest duo is in the cover photo, well, let me explain. Outkast is coming back with a 40 festival reunion tour starting at Coachella. This means that yes, it is possible, we have just have another outkast album in the near future. What does this mean for hip-hop? More of that Andre and Antwon.

In other news, Mac Miller left Rostrum Records, Ciara and Future are having a kid, Juicy J selected his scholarship winner and Kanye could be going to jail for assault. Are you suprised?

Annnnd for all you suckas who didn’t catch it live, we had some very special guests helping us bring in the first show of 2014. You may know them as last year’s dynamic duo, the president and the HR manager, the bad gyals, A&E or whatever other names the claimed. We know ’em as Emily and Ali. They are the lovely ladies behind RadioLaurier’s longest running show; The A&E Show. Did I mention that they’re lovely?

REAL OR RATCHET this week was long overdue. We looked at some hip-hop culture trends we saw in 2013 that are up for debate. We asked A&E if we should keep them going or dead them asap. Some trends included rapping about social media, subliminal disses, RTing thirsty fans etc. Check out the full list right here and let us know what you think. A&E were undecided on a few.

THE REALNESS was kinda jokes…but also very, very real. Often times in hip-hop we see some ignorance. Rappers get their cheques after tours, merch or album releases and hit the mall. And when I say hit the mall I mean they HIT the mall. We all know rappers are notorious for spending money openly on outrageous things such as fur coats, cars, houses and, you guessed it, heaux. It’s almost a right of passage for rappers to buy as much ridiculous stuff as humanly possible. The last thing you would want from a rapper is money advice, right? Wrong. they may be few and far between BUT there is a few exceptions to the rule. We found a few lyrics that prove some rappers have smart, steady and educated spending habits. Check it out right here. Told yaaa so.

Our UNDERGROUND KING was Lincoln. We’ve got an interview with him coming soon. Just wait on it…

VERSE OF THE WEEK took it way back. You k now those verses that remind you of elementry school or high school or even last summer? Well, we do, and this week’s theme was Most Nostalgic Verse. This had to be a verse + story combo explaining how that verse made you feel backback in the day. Who was gunna judge? None other than A&E (they know a thing or two about nostalgia.. just ask them). I went with 50 Cent’s verse off Outta Control Remix and Kamo went with Kanye’s verse off All Falls Down. Who won? Kkkkkkkamo took this one handily. I think that makes us even for the year? No sweat, I got ’em next week. YOU KNOW ME!

Well, that’s it from us this week. If you weren’t able to tune in live, you can listen to our podcast below. Also, don’t forget to follow us on Twitter -> @RLRapUp

It’s An Experience…

Wuddduuppp yall?! I hope yall haven’t turned down too much from Halloween because Kamo and I are toooo turnt. Well maybe not. Anyways, we kinda had a slow week in hip-hop but we still managed to keep things funfunfun! We hope…

We kicked things off with a little BamBam Action Bronson. Queens’ finest just dropped a new tape called Blue Chips 2. It’s got some dope features and of course some of that classic NYC boom bap. Download it right here. We also had a mixtape drop from Mac Miller. He took on another persona and put together a project called Delusional Thomas. The raps are clean but the pitch is messy. Check it out here if you are up to it. Oh yeah, and Kamo went to the Chance The Rapper concert this past Monday and said it was too trill. Wait.. who? Check the cover photo. #AcidRap

PLUS, Nicki is mad at Drake, Kanye pushed back in tour, TDE is mad at the world (and maybe Kendrick) and Chief Keef went back to jail. All pretty typical stuff. Right?

REAL OR RATCHET this week was funny. Sooo we took a look at a list of the 20 funniest things rappers have ever said (not in a song) and deemed them either real or ratchet. Some of the slurs include Kanye’s T-Swift mic grab, CamRon’s trolling and of course Jim Jones “hit list”. Take a took at the list for yourself right here and let us know what you think! “I’m a gangster Ms. Katie”. Ha.

This week’s UNDERGROUND KING was a friend of the show and dope A-Town rhyme slinger. Did that sound corny? Don’t care because it’s our boy theO. theO is a rapper coming outta Aurora but currently resides in Kingston. He has released some tracks that he actually performed at last year’s Hip-Hop Hangout but is now releasing more material with his new tape ‘bOy’. The tape will have a little some some for everyone so make sure to check it when it drops. Just wait on it…

GGP this week came straight outta Harlem, well, more specifically, the A$AP camp. Fergy Ferg dropped the classic song ‘Shabba’ back in the summer. It features his labelmate A$AP Rocky and is the perfect Phils pre drink party track. Check out the extra trill video right here. FIY this song is best listened to while wearing 8 gold chains like you’re Shashabba Ranks!

THE REALNESS this week was, well, real. You know how rappers will get sexy R&B singers to do their hooks and then other rappers will fall in love with her voice and get her on their songs and on and on and on and on. BUT then they fizzle out and are never to be heard of again. You know what I’m talking ’bout? NO? Okay, well let me hit yall up with some examples. Ashanti, Missy Elliot, Mary J Blige, J LO and most recently Skylar Grey. However, now, in 2013, we have found our new singer-hook make-female. Can’t guess? Well, it is the lovely Jhene Aiko. Jhene has been on songs with J Cole, Drake and Childish Gambino and is killing it. She will undoubtedly be the next hook princess in hip-hop. Annnnd that’s real, from time G.

VERSE OF THE WEEK was bar heavy. This week we decided to do the ‘Best Punchline’ verse. This had to be a verse with some unreal punchlines that really hit hard. Pause. I picked Lil Wayne’s verse on Green Ranger while Kamo picked Big Sean’s verse on Lemonade. Winner winner chicken dinner? Kamo took this one for the first time in a while. That moves the score to 5-3 for moi. Don’t worry yall, Imma be her next week just to bring the bars right back. Ha!

Well, that’s it from us this week. Make sure to hit us up on Twitter (@RLRapUp) and join in on the conversation. We will smell yall next week at the same time and same place. Maybe with a  few special guests…
