The Morning After More Life

This week, DJ Goldilocks and DJ O$AP began saying their goodbyes to Radio Laurier and their listeners for this school year. Crazy to think how quickly the time’s passed…but as sad as it is to say goodbye to this year, they hoped their playlist of the morning gave you More Life.

That’s right, DJ Goldilocks and DJ O$AP jammed out this morning to Drake’s newly-released album, More Life. They discussed the album’s track list and some of the featured artists.

Currently, their favourite tracks are: Ice Melts feat. Young Thug (DJ O$AP’s choice), and Get It Together (DJ Goldilocks’ choice). They made special mention of the songs Passionfruit and Gyalchester. They also compared the similar beats to some of the songs in More Life to that of Drake’s last album, Views. Could there have been some inspiration stemming from the popularity of One Dance to influence Passionfruit?

There were a few interludes on this album, which was more of a miss for these DJ’s. O$SAP and Goldilocks agreed that the interlude with Drake’s mother on the phone seems to be an overdone feature that many rap artists are including on their recent albums, for example Mac Miller in the Divine Feminine.

Drake really impressed the DJ’s with some of his featured artists, especially Young Thug! Young Thug is one of O$AP’s favourite rappers, and thinks he is one of the most underrated rappers.

If you want to hear more of Young Thug’s music to see for yourself, here’s a few of his suggestions:

Track List (all from Drake’s album, More Life):

  • Passionfruit
  • Madiba Riddim
  • Blem
  • 4422 (feat. Sampha)
  • Ice Melts (feat. Young Thug)
  • Get It Together
  • Gyalchester
  • Glow
  • Fake Love

The Basement: Nov 27th Recap – Topics, Playlist, Featured Artists

Rest in peace to 15-year old James Means

Rest in peace to 15-year old James Means

This show’s discussion segment started of on a sensitive and emotional note as we talked about the recent murder of 15 year old James Means in Charleston, West Virginia. James Means was a young black male killed at the hands of 62 year old William Pulliam, a bigot with a penchant for violence. WCHS News reports that Pulliam was illegally carrying the firearm he used to murder Means, due to a previous conviction related to domestic battery charges (full article here from WCHS). According to NBC News, the confrontation occurred when Means and Pulliam bumped into each other outside a Dollar General store which was the incident that ignited this tragedy. While the police still speculate on whether or not the crime was hate related, various sources have cited Pulliam as saying, “the way I look at it, that’s another piece of trash off the street”.
In addition to discussing the death of James Means, we also explored a recent air raid on a children’s hospital in Aleppo, Syria. A video on Al Jazeera shows a young boy breathing into a mask, gasping for oxygen due to toxic materials that were released into the air by the barrel bombs dropped on the city. Generally speaking, in times of armed conflict, the lives of women and children are considered ‘off-limits’, but considering this is far from the first attack targeting children in Aleppo, it demonstrates just how terrible the conflict in Syria has become.
Both of these conversations led us to explore the perceived value of a life, whether that of a black life threatened by hatred in the States or a child’s life under siege in Syria. We also discussed how these unjust deaths incite feelings of anger which leads to the desire for revenge as well as the difference between justice and vengeance/the danger of succumbing to vengeful desires.

In our pop culture segment, we started by discussing the various ways people choose to acquire music, whether purchasing legally, choosing to stream through one of the many services available or downloading off the internet. The majority of artists lose a large portion of their revenue from album sales to labels, management, promoters etc. We talked about whether or not buying music is truly the best way to support your favourite artists, considering artists are now claiming they make the majority of their money off touring and merchandise.
In the same lane of music as a topic, we also debated what constitutes “real hip hop”. With the advent and success of ‘new age’ rappers such as Lil’ Yachty, Young Thug, Desiigner and so on, we felt in necessary to examine the dynamic and ever-changing scene of contemporary urban music, which ended up expanding past the scope of hip hop/rap to R&B. The main two positions were as such
Stance A: real hip hop requires lyricism and content with substance which new age hip hop fails to provide
Stance B: the current hip hop scene differs in the delivery and content of lyrics, but if it still maintains its connection to youth culture, provides a voice for that generation and serves some sort of function, it can be classified as hip hop.
During our people/relationship segment talked about what to do when dating someone that your family/friends dislike or do not get along with.

The Weeknd – Die For You
Nebu Kiniza – Gassed Up
Childish Gambino – Redbone

TOBi – Deeper (prod. by Nate Smith)
TOBi – Understand You Ft. K Forest (prod. by dF)

To describe TOBi as simply another Toronto rapper would fail to do justice to his music. A combination of witty bars, smooth vocals and refreshing and unique production (courtesy of producers Nate Smith and df) all contribute to TOBi’s dynamic sound. In addition, one of his greatest assets may be his choice of content, as he explores themes of lust and love from new perspectives on his songs, “Deeper” and “Understand You”. A Laurier alumni & former member of ABS Laurier, TOBi has been making significant moves in his career, especially after dropping his 7-track EP FYi earlier this year. He’s also recently dropped a video to accompany “Deeper”. The colourful yet subdued use of lighting in the video parallel his smooth vocals on the song as he sings, “she always wanna hear me go deeper”. True to the song’s catchy melodies and up tempo beat, TOBi displays some of his dance moves in the video, and after hearing the song and watching the video, you’ll want to do the same.

Check out the video for “Deeper premiered on Noisey here, or on his official YouTube page.

You can hear both Deeper, Understand You and the full FYi EP on his Soundcloud page

Summer Sixteen Tour

Drake and Future finished off their second Summer Sixteen show in Atlanta last night, by bringing out hometown favorites Gucci Mane, Young Thug and Usher.

While there may not be a flying stage, Drake and Futures Summer Sixteen tour has been shaping up to be a “can’t miss” showcase of special guests. In Chicago, the pair brought out Kanye West; in Detroit, they brought out Eminem; and in Ohio, the one and only Lebron James. Considering that Atlanta is Future’s home town, its no surprise the city was blessed with two tour dates, and a chance to see four of the cities most popular artists join the stage.

During the first night in Atlanta, Drake and Future started things off with a bang by bringing out Gucci Mane, and 2 Chainz. With the bar set high, fans expected another big night from the What a Time to Be Alive rappers, and they did not disappoint. During the second night of their stop in Atlanta, Drake and Future welcomed Gucci Mane back to the stage, but this time accompanied by Young Thug, and Usher who performed their new single “No Limit”. With some of the cities biggest names all sharing one stage, the crowd could barely keep it together. Check out some of the reactions and videos below.

With Miami next in the Summer Sixteen schedule, all focus shifts to the sunshine state. Considering Rick Ross’s most recent comments regarding Drake and Meek Mill’s beef, its likely Drake and Future won’t be bringing the big man out, however that shouldn’t effect what’s sure to be another memorable two nights in Miami

Your role reaches beyond the studio as a member of the Radio Laurier DJ team. You have the opportunity to contribute to our web content as a blogger. There are a few rules to follow, but at the same time, remember to have fun with it! Treat life good, and it’ll treat you good back.

Things you MUST do:

  • Sort show into correct category (every show now has one) (only 1 category)
  • Set featured image + add image into post (can be the same)
  • Include track list (helpful for those who missed, required by music assistants for charting)
  • Insert show title + something consistent (e.g. Week 09 or Episode 09)
  • PROOFREAD before publishing
  • Add proper tags (only names)
  • Say correct/full name before using nicknames (Meek Mill > Meeky Mouse or Drake > 6God)
  • Post within 24 hours after show airs (website, Facebook, Twitter, etc).

Things you SHOULD do:

  • Bold artist names on first mention
  • Album/mixtape names bold and italicized on first mention; just italicized following
  • Tour names capitalized (Legend of the Fall, HIHORSE’d, Summer Sixteen Tour)
  • Insert links, embed tracks & videos (YouTube, Soundcloud, Apple Music, etc).
  • Add “Suggested Article” section at bottom of post (link fellow RL blog posts)
  • Share your blog on personal social media and tag Radio Laurier

Things you NEVER do:

  • Curse – if you’re quoting inappropriate language from an artist use *** for rest of word (i.e. s***, f***)
  • Slander (if it’s a personal opinion, make that clear)
  • Post inappropriate material or photos
  • Remove credit (i.e. if you cite an article or quote, insert the link)

The Rap Up: Episode No. 9

Americans are trying to figure out what’s happening to their country because last week the worst of the worst happened. If you’ve been living under a rock for the past week, you will be surprised that Donald Trump is the new President Of the United States Of America. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? we’ll tell you why. Last Tuesday on Election Day, it was a stressful day for everyone watching but mostly Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. After hours of waiting to see who would win, Hillary Clinton calls Donald Trump to congratulate him on his win. This had America going crazy. Instantly after being elected riots started everywhere in the states. Hate crimes were worse than they have ever been. Schools were spray painting Muslims don’t belong, deport immigrants & one school in specific got a black doll and hung it. Trying to imply black people should die. Hip Hop especially was furious about the decision. Rapper YG right after Donald Trump won tweets “FDT TOUR IS BACK IN DENVER” Denver being a mostly white state who knew what could have happened, but the show went smoothly everything was good. All that we can do now is pray he does a good job running this country and pray that everyone is going to be okay.

Lil Wayne & the Roc?

No not Dwayne Johnson. Now, we’re not saying that collab wouldn’t be amazing, but this week we discussed the possibility of Lil Wayne signing to Roc Nation. As some of you may already know, the last couple years have not been pleasant to Lil Wayne, and it doesn’t appear to be getting better anytime soon. With the lawsuit concerning his highly anticipated album  Tha Carter 5in an almost frozen state, and his relationship with Birdman melting away, its not surprising to see Lil Wayne testing his options. Recently at Camp Flog Gnaw, Wayne performed “I’m Me” to which he changed the lyrics from “I’m a MF Cash Money Millionaire”  to ” I’m a MF Roc-a-fella Millionaire”, which understandably sparked rumors of Wayne possibly seeking a new deal with Jay Z’s Roc Nation. While this would be quite the transition for all involved, the potential for new Lil Wayne material, mentored by Jay Z, is a tantalizing prospect.

Belly of the Beast

Rapper Belly recently released Inzombia, the mixtape. The Ottawa native has been making waves in the Canadian music industry since 2008. For many Canadian rappers crossing the boarder is a final accomplishment in their career. The Juno Award winner recently moved to Los Angeles to reach a larger audience and push his music in a way he could have never done while living in Ottawa. Belly is one of the newest members of Jay Z’s Roc Nation label. Being signed to Jay has opened a lot of doors for the Ottawa native, he’s been blessed with features on his tape from various artists like Jadakiss, Ashanti, Future, Young Thug, etc. Hopefully there’s a lot more good news in store for Belly on the music side of things, he’s been active in the rap game for almost a decade now and he’s finally getting the respect as a rapper that he deserves.

Drake the Culture Vulture?

For those of you who don’t know who Mo-G is, he is a Toronto rapper that’s accusing one of his local counterparts of biting his style. This person is none other than the 6 God himself, Drake. Mo-G laid into Drizzy and his manager, Oliver El-Khatib, on Instagram. He alleges Drake only offered him $500 for writing credits while also biting on some of Mo-G’s swag and dance moves. It’s unclear if there will be any resolution, but this isn’t the first time Drake has been accused of stealing someone’s flow. It’s been reported that Drizzy has stolen bits of style from The Weeknd and Puff Daddy. While I’m of those that believe 6 God is too smart to low-ball his peers like this, it’s worth noting that no matter what you put that man’s name on, you’re going to gain publicity. So maybe that’s all this is: a publicity stunt by Mo-G.

Metro Boomin Trusts Batman.

It’s becoming more and more obvious that If Metro Boomin dosen’t trust you, success probably isn’t in your near future. With the upcoming release of the blockbuster hollywood film Batman Vs. Superman (or as we like to say, Battle of the Orphans) quickly approaching, Ben Affleck has been doing some promotional interviews for the media. In his most recent interview, Afflack was asked if he thought Metro Boomin trusts Batman or Superman more, to which he replied Batman. It wasn’t long before young Metro caught wind of the comments and tweeted out to confirm he’s indeed a Batman fan and always has been. Is it too late to cast Metro Boomin as commissioner Gordan?

Young Thug… is on a horse.

Well it’s clear Young Thug is gearing up to release something, we’re just not sure what. All logic pointed to thug dropping Slime Season 3 on March 25th considering his SXSW promotion for the mixtape. If you missed it, several pallbearer’s marched down 6th street, Austin Texas, with a coffin repping bright red spray paint announcing that SS3 would be coming our way March 25th. Over here at The Rap Up we thought this was a pretty awesome way to promote an upcoming mixtape, that was of course until Thugger dropped a video days later promoting an upcoming tour starting the 25th too. Featuring a classic style theatre, Young Thug rides up to the doors rocking rose coloured glasses riding a horse with ruby slippers on. Yup you read that right. The only confusing thing however is that we can’t tell if we’re getting SS3, a Hitunes tour, or maybe both? Regardless WE WANT MORE HORSE INSPIRED ALBUM PROMOTION.

Kanye West’s New Album Is Finally Here… Sort of

With the unveiling of Yeezy Season 3 at Madison Square Garden, yesterday in New York City, the music world continues to wait with baited breathe for the moment The Life Of Pablo has a download button beside it. Now, no one’s quite sure where The Life Of Pablo will be released but logically, we imagine it should be through Tidal (which Kanye West owns a portion of). According to the ever entertaining twitter account of Mr. West, the album is currently being mastered and should be out at some point today however, no specific time has been given. Admittedly, we over here at The Rap Up aren’t too impressed with the final title change, however I, TJ Mroz your Rap Up co-host, am a big fan of the recently released cover art and purposely downloaded Tidal for an early premiere of the album during the streaming of Yeezy Season 3 (instead of studying for my midterm). From what I’ve heard, the album should certainly live up to the hype, however may not sound exactly like everyone is expecting, which isn’t a bad thing. Beware, Yeezy season approaches.

Future > Young Thug

If you’re a fan of Future and Young Thug, you may be aware that the only people possibly riding a bigger wave at the moment would be Drake and Kanye West due to their upcoming and highly anticipated albums. With two brand new projects already in 2016, Future has decided to give the fans a new mixtape (Purple Reign) and a new album (EVOL), both receiving a warm welcome by fans. On the other hand, Young Thug has come through with a new mixtape titled I’m Up however the project looks to fall significantly short of its sales goal, expecting to move a mere 15-20k including streams, while Future’s Evol which was released on the same day looks to move around 145-150k with streams. While Thugger loves to claim the opposite, there’s a clear gap between these two artists. Not to mention Future just inked a brand new deal with APPLE which should push him far beyond the realm of Rich Gang fame.

All-Star Weekend 2016 Approaches

As the weekend begins, so does NBA All Star 2016 and in case you’re out of the loop, this is a BIG deal. As a result of “the 6” hosting the league’s All Star festivities this year, it will be the first time the event has been held outside of the US. Stars such as Steph Curry, LeBron James and Canada’s own Andrew Wiggins will be taking part in multiple events this weekend. This is also great news for the Raptors who have 2 All Star representatives this year as Kyle Lowry starts in his second straight All Star game and DeMar DeRozan was selected by coaches to round out the roster of the East. If you’re on your way to Toronto, good luck and be sure to bundle up as it will be busier and colder than it’s been in recent memory. The first day of events begins on Friday with the Celebrity Game in which Kevin Hart will be coaching one team and the 6 God himself, Drake, will be coaching the other. The Rising Stars challenge will also take place on Friday as the best of the NBA’s up and coming stars showcase their skills against each other. Saturday will include highly anticipated events that include the Skills Challenge, Three-Point Shootout and Dunk Contest. Rounding out the weekend will be the All-Star game on Sunday.
