NextWeekNow March 23

On this Thursday March 23rd, we observe the second to last airing of NextWeekNow with your host MCMac of this year. It’s sad but true. It was a shortened show again this week. We’ll figure out the technical errors eventually. I promise. On to the news!

A spa in Perth Australia has opened up exclusively for babies. Human babies. It is excruciatingly adorable and pointless but there are a lot of cute baby pictures.

The World Happiness Report of 2017 was released and Canada is in the top ten at seven. The list is led by Norway followed by all of Scandinavia then us.

Sony has announced a release date for the Venom film. Venom, for those who are unaware, is a killer alien villain of Spiderman. The release date is October 5th 2018. The date is the same as the original release date for the Aquaman film, but that date has been pushed back.

Iron Fist has received bad critical approval almost exclusively since its release. The creators have been a little butt-hurt about it and have taken to blaming Donald Trump for being obnoxious or saying that the softly liberal can’t take the idea of a white guy not being ‘Oriental’ enough. What a collection of scumbags.

Black Panther will be coming out February of next year. Dope. The linked article is mostly a meaningless interview but that little nugget is at the end.

A shop in Cleveland Ohio created a giant ball of popcorn for New Years Eve. It was stolen this week… and then returned.

Some American researchers did some research on the meta-data of pornography searches in the Bible Belt and found that the more religious you are the more likely you are to look up porn. I don’t know if this has weight or meaning but it is interesting.

J & P Grocery has opened up in downtown Kitchener. It has taken hot minute, but maybe it’s going to be the best grocery store ever.

A plane going to Alaska had a loose snake on it. It was not venomous or dangerous in any way but wow people love snakes on planes. I wonder why?

Batman was in Montreal this week helping people dig out their cars.

A piece of space junk created in 2007 by the Chinese has a twitter account. It’s a real poet.

Some research has found that the blood of the young might be able to help reduce the effects of aging. I don’t know if it requires consumption, injection, sacrifice or what but still.

There is some new research that I cannot explain in any way but it focuses on the idea that light may be able to slow down. Somehow.

I recently discovered a fascinating new site. If you are a comic boo fan you might like this. Particularly if you think DC are nuts with how they handle their intellectual properties. It’s called “Has DC done Something Stupid Today?”

Superbad came out 10 years ago. Time flies, eh? I remember that movie being new. The linked article has reviews of a few ‘super bad’ comedies that came out since the film. I do not agree with all of the reviews but most of them seem pretty on point.

John Goodman got a star on the Hollywood walk of fame and Jeff Bridges came by to show that the Dude abides.

This is the second last show of this semester. Keep your head up and push through, we are almost there. I’ll talk to you NextWeekNow.

Week 10.2 – #MoreLifeMonday, March 20, 2017

Tonight, DJ Deej and DJ Winks were in the studio for more radio fun, and More LifeYes, the moment that we’ve all (especially Winks) have been waiting for, came on March 18. Within 24 hours, the playlist by Drake and the rest of the October Firm received nearly 90 million streams worldwide.

Here are the initial track reviews:

  1. “Passionfruit” was overhyped on social media prior to the album actually dropping. Both DJs expected a club banger, but instead received a chill track. This is not a complaint, just a bit of a surprise.
  2. “Can’t Have Everything” – Deej has come to the conclusion that its beat is just “Successful” (ft. Trey Songz and Lil’ Wayne) sped up. “Try reciting the chorus of “Successful” over it and see what happens,” she said. However, the ending segment was reminiscent of “Look What You’ve Done” off of 2011’s Take Carea welcome and pleasant nod to the Drake of the past.
  3. “Teenage Fever” is relaxed, but a lazy sample of “If You Had My Love by Jennifer Lopez. Totally explains why she and Drake were hanging out all the time though, if anything.
  4. Although “Nothings into Somethings” is lacking lyrically, it is a telltale PARTYNEXTDOOR production, indicated by the heavy 808. It is very similar to Party’s track “West District.”
  5. “Lose You” and “Portland” are definitely the bangers on the album.

Here’s what else we talked about:

a) St. Paddy’s 2017 — Laurier’s celebration set a record with an estimated 12 000 people on Ezra Avenue. The Spotted at Laurier tweet comparing the street gathering to Donald Trump‘s inauguration has received nearly 4000 “retweets” about 14 000 “likes” on Twitter, and nods from people like Andy Lassner, the Executive Producer of The Ellen Show.

b) Nintendo Switch (?) — This fall, DJ Winks is moving away from home for the first time. He really wants to get his own TV and a game console for his new pad. He’s in the process of doing research, but cannot seem to decide between the new Nintendo Switch, the XBOX One S, and the PS4 Pro. We have put out a poll on Twitter to (hopefully) ease the decision-making process.

c) Two more shows??!! — We’re looking to do an all-request segment next week. Please Tweet us any requests, or write on our Facebook line (both @RLAfterClass). Watch our IG for prompts and in studio action. You can follow us @afterclazz.

This week’s track list is as follows:

  1. “Chanel” – Frank Ocean
  2. “Fake Love” – Drake ft. Travis Garland
  3. “Free Smoke” – Drake
  4. “Passionfruit” – Drake
  5. “Teenage Fever” – Drake
  6. “Portland” – Drake ft. Quavo & Travi$ Scott
  7. “Lose You” – Drake
  8. “Look What You’ve Done” – Drake
  9. “Find Your Love” – Drake
  10. “Know Yourself” – Drake

Week 6.2 – February 13, 2017
Shows/After Class

Week 6.2 – February 13, 2017

The trio was in the studio for World Radio Day, talking about the UN and World Radio Day, the Grammy Awards, and Valentine’s Day.

World Radio Day

World Radio Day was started by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) in 2012. It is a themed day that focuses on fundraising, awareness, and promotion of the Arts.

2013: UNESCO-themed: 75 interviews, 130 fundraisers worldwide

2014: Gender Equality + Women’s Empowerment in Radio

2015: Youth and Radio

2016: Radio in Times of Emergency and Disaster

2017: Radio is You — celebration of audience interaction with radio personalities

The Grammy Awards

Although DJ Winks missed out, Deej and Nix really enjoyed Chance the Rapper’s performance. Nix also enjoyed Katy Perry’s comeback and performance. We can likely expect new music from her soon. A pregnantBeyonce went all out with performance, featuring a bunch of dancers and her on a throne. Consensus? A bit too much/over the top. Ceelo Green’s contribution to the night? Giving us the meme material we’ve all been longing for. He was even photoshopped into several of Donald Trump‘s family photos:

Winks reported on albums expected this year. They are coming from: Flume, 2 Chainz, Rick Ross, Drake, The Killers, DJ Khaled, Future, and Enrique Iglesias.

Valentine’s Day

Whether you refer to it as “Singles’ Awareness Day,” “Galentine’s Day” or “Tuesday,” we have agreed that it is not about grand gestures, but about the person you are with. If you are lucky enough to be in love, every day is Valentine’s Day. If you’re single, give that love to yourself, or your loved ones. Either way, self-love and self-care is very important.

This week’s track list is as follows:

  1. Doo Wop (That Thing) – Lauryn Hill
  2. No Diggity – Blackstreet ft. Dr. Dre and Queen Pen
  3. Summer Girls – LFO
  4. Same Drugs – Chance the Rapper
  5. Ain’t No Rest For the Wicked – Cage the Elephant
  6. Never Be Like You – Flue ft. Kai
  7. I Love You – Axwell, Ingrosso & Kid Ink
  8. Dab of Ranch – Migos & DJ Durel
  9. No Heart – 21 Savage & Metro Boomin
  10. Bittersweet Symphony – The Verve

Mondays from 10-11 p.m. Tune in, and turn up.

Week 4.2 – January 30, 2017
Shows/After Class

Week 4.2 – January 30, 2017

The three of us were politickin’ hard in the studio. There was so much to talk about, yet at times, we found it hard to find the words. On the bright side, we did our first live stream on Instagram (@afterclazz) and it went…well (?)

Shia LaBeouf and Jaden Smith, amongst other celebrities, have launched a live stream campaign under the name “He Will Not Divide Us.” They plan to conduct this live stream for the entire four year of Donald Trump‘s first term as President of the United States. On January 25th, LaBeouf was arrested for suspicion of assault while on camera. He allegedly grabbed a man by the scarf and began yelling, “He will not divide us” in his ear. Reports following vouched for LaBeouf acting in an appropriate manner, being that the man was reciting part of Adolf Hitler‘s “1488” speech, stating that it is the duty of the white man to secure a future for themselves and their white children. To read more about this movement, click here.

The #MuslimBan is all over the news. Rudy Giuliani went on the record stating that it was not a question of religion… which begs the question, how is it a Muslim ban if it’s not based on religion? We battled with this question, but DJ Winks provided us with the perfect video to examine both sides with:

The transportation network company Uber has taken a massive hit. Millions have deleted the app in retaliation towards its CEO,

    Travis Kalanick

. He is a member of Trump’s economic advisory council.
The biggest lesson that we want to teach is this:

      educate yourself

. Do not hate others for their views, just because they differ from yours. If you have the democratic right to vote, inform yourself and use it.

        All Laurier students

can have their say in the future of our Student Publications organization through attending our Annual General Meeting this Wednesday, February 1st. Make your voice heard, and your views know. For the event, click

          this link.

This week’s track list is as follows:
          1. “March Madness” – Future
          2. “Jordan Belfort” – Wes Walker & Dyl
          3. “Rolex” – Ayo & Teo
          4. “Get Right Witcha” – Migos
          5. “Run It” – Major Lazer ft. PARTYNEXTDOOR & Nicki Minaj
          6. “Kelly Price” = Migos ft. Travi$ Scott
          7. “Mercy” – Kanye West, Big Sean, Pusha T, & 2 Chainz
          8. “All Night” – The Vamps x Matoma

Mondays from 10-11 p.m. Tune in, and turn up.

          Week 3.2 – January 23, 2017
          Shows/After Class

          Week 3.2 – January 23, 2017

The entire After Class squad was back in the studio this week. There was a lot to talk about, yet not much; it was a lot of the same stuff that spread over the course of several days (like the fog that loomed after the Trump inauguration).

Speaking of, let’s start with that. The President (who has only been in office for three full days) has openly revoked the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which is one of former president Barack Obama’s signature initiative, joining together twelve nations in total.

In protest of President Donald Trump, millions of women (and also men) around the world joined in the #womensmarch in support of pro-choice and in peaceful protest of Trump’s anti-abortion agenda. Although it is a tricky subject, all three of us agree that having a child should be a choice for both men and women. Men have a right and responsibility to parent, and women have the right of responsibility of those same things, plus successfully giving birth. It calls into question the choices that people have, particularly victims of sexual assault.

In more local and slightly less serious news, Beta Nightclub has officially closed its doors. No word yet on what is to become of the old theatre turned one of the best clubs in the world turned… relic? Although we feel for those who were stakeholders (i.e. owners, employees), we can’t say we’ll miss the place.

This week’s track list is as follows:

          1. “Nights” – Frank Ocean
          2. “Sunset Lover” – Petit Biscuit
          3. “Burning Man” – Post Malone
          4. “Fresh” – Lil Uzi Vert
          5. “Wild Child” – Lupe Fiasco ft. Jake Torrey
          6. “Money Ain’t A Thang” – Jermaine Dupri ft. Jay-Z
          7. “Bad and Boujee” – Migos
          8. “Moonrock” – DVBBS ft. Juicy J

Mondays from 10-11 p.m. Tune in, and turn up.

The Rap Up: Episode No. 10

          Kanye… What’s Going on Buddy?

Kanye West has had quite the week. Fans in attendance at his two most recent concerts in California, were left confused and frustrated. After only performing a couple songs, Kanye began ranting at length over his support for; Donald Trump, frustration with Jay Z and Beyonce, distain for Drake and DJ Khaled unfairly promoting their hit “For Free” on the radio, and his opinion that African-American individuals should stop talking about racism. It didn’t get better from there either. The next day Kanye cancelled the remaining three stops in his St. Pablo Tour for exhaustion. Last night, it was reported by CNN that Kanye had in fact been admitted at a Los Angeles medical center where he was kept under observation regarding his health and safety. CNN reports this decision was influenced by his personal doctor after evaluating West for extreme sleep deprivation.

          Lil Wayne Vs. Birdman

Recently Lil Wayne performed at a concert that Tyler the Creator puts on and he denounced Cash Money and shouted out Roc-a-fella. Of course Birdman had a little hissy fit about it and squashed all negotiations that were in placed for Lil Wayne to leave Cash Money. Birdman and Lil Wayne are basically like father and son, or they once were. Coming up in the rap game as a young artist there’s no denying that Birdman helped with the success of Lil Wayne. Break ups happen, we all go through it, have seen people go through it, it’s a natural part of life. In this situation Birdman is appearing to be that crazy ex wife that does not want to let go of a love and relationship that’s no longer there by being petty and dragging the divorce settlement. In this situation Birdman, who’s the CEO of Cash Money Records is holding on to The Carter 5, and wants Lil Wayne to release it under Cash Money so he can profit from it as well. Birdman is known in the industry for not paying artists and taking advantage of them. He’s even been compared to the notorious Suge Knight, except Suge would actually put Birdman to shame. For someone who he’s referred to as his son in interviews, Birdman sure do have a way of showing us how to treat your children.

          Views Pays Off

Over this past weekend Drake has received 4 AMA awards for his hard work on the album Views. He received the awards for Favourite Rap Hip Hop album, favourite artist, and 2 for favourite songs Hip Hop and R&B for “Work” and “Hotline Bling”. While on stage accepting his award Drake throws some shade on who we believed to be is Kanye West. Due to the inappropriate 16 minute rant Kanye went on this past weekend in Sacramento. Kanye called out Drake saying him and DJ Khaled had some type of agreement with the radio to always be playing the song “For Free”. Drake while accepting his speech says “Careful how you speak my name” then later on in the evening ABC gave a congratulations post on Instagram to Drake on his wins for the night and Khaled comments ” congratulations”. Then Drake replied by saying ” stop running your mouth and make a hit”. We all assume Kanye was the guy he was talking about because it was the most recent event but it could also any other rapper Drake is beefing with. Who do you guys think he was talking about?
