Winter Winds

Winter Winds

Oh hello again,

Once again I’ve been away a long, long time. I’ve been sick, tired, and had a crazy schedule lately but so far the show has been quite exceptional this year. It has evolved a lot over time but the one thing that always stays the same is the music. I always want to play as much music as I can.

Lately I’ve been talking a lot about festivals. With the Primavera Sound Festival in Spain, the Reading & Leeds Festival in England lineups announced things are heating up for a huge summer ahead. Not to mention that a Bonnaroo (a little closer to home) will be announcing their lineup on the 19th of this month! Exciting things, friends.

As for music I’ve been playing a lot of Bombay Bicycle Club and other random picks. I’ll pick up with the song and show lists this Wednesday after the show so stay tuned for then!

Fall Days with AIRWAVES

Fall Days with AIRWAVES

It’s been a dang long time and I think it’s about time I posted some stuff about AIRWAVES. I haven’t blogged in a little under a month which is terrible. But I’m here now.

Over the past month I’ve talked about what makes a good review, album release, series finale in TV, a show you’ll never forget, a good cover and a solid local music scene. We’ve played tons of songs, seen lots of releases and show dates come and go. Most notably: Local Natives, the Naked and Famous, Arcade Fire, London Grammar, and Dan Griffin. And we still have shows to come: Kate Nash, the Paper Kites, Mazzy Star, etc.

Due to such a long list of songs I’m going to save that for this week’s show.

But here are some notable show dates:

Kate Nash – November 5
Holy Ghost – November 6
the Paper Kites – November 7
Story of the Year – November 9
James Blake – November 10
Mazzy Star – November 16
Said the Whale – November 21
Born Ruffians – November 22
Alvin Risk – November 29

Thanks and stay tuned for more!

Short Sleeves in Long Sleeve Weather – AIRWAVES

Short Sleeves in Long Sleeve Weather – AIRWAVES

I greet you on this crisp September day from my desk chair at Desire2Learn. Having caught up on my work, I decided this would be a good time to finally write that post that’s been in the back of my wandering mind.

So welcome back! Most of you will be starting a fall school term and should be very excited. Not only because everyone is back in the Loo, that fall means sweater weather and comfy desert boots, but also because of the HUGE amount of shows happening. This autumn is sure going to be sweet, with a killer lineup of shows the likes I haven’t seen before.

This past Wednesday I talked of what makes a good band comeback, focusing on Mazzy Star who are returning from a 17 YEAR hiatus. The show also featured RAC as the artist of the day. With a new EP this October that includes a collaboration with Tokyo Police Club and other huge songs, it had to be done. This week on the AIRWAVE CINEMA I broke out some old tracks from How to Make it in America and Entourage.

Notable September Show Dates:

Adam K – September 7 (Beta)
Volcano Choir – September 8
Passion Pit – September 11 (LAURIER)

Zeds Dead – September 22 (Beta)
Bastille – September 25
Hollerado – September 26 (Starlight)
Iron & Wine – September 28
Daughter – September 29

This song is so catchy and has a pretty cool video too.

Summer Skin – AIRWAVES

Summer Skin – AIRWAVES

Hello again wild things,

It’s been a while, but I greet you as an old friend – where months may pass with no communication and yet when you do finally meet again, it is as if nothing has changed.

Waterloo summers are really something different and if you’ve never experienced one, you’re missing out. They are a less frantic, casual affair. Where the lines at bars are short, patio beers are plenty, and visits from friends mean something a little more. It doesn’t hurt that the weather is mostly relaxing, either.  For a lot of those reasons it has been really enjoyable doing AIRWAVES in the summer. The show takes on a free-spirited nature.

This past Wednesday I talked of what makes a good youtube channel (frequent updates, extra information, particular genre/s) and it featured Daughter as the artist of the day. With a new album this year and a show coming up in September (the 29th at the Phoenix), it seemed fitting to talk of this indie-folk band based out of London, England. As well, on the AIRWAVE CINEMA I took songs from One Tree Hill and Californication.

Notable Show Dates:

Jimmy Eat World – August 2
Passion Pit – September 11 (AT LAURIER)
Arctic Monkeys – September 15
Local Natives – September 21
Daughter – September 29
Two Door Cinema Club – October 15

My favourite song on the new Daughter album.

Track list:

Shallows by Daughter
North Star by Rural Alberta Advantage
Byegone by Volcano Choir
Girl Named Alex by Kurt Vile
Spotlight by Leagues
Apartment by Young the Giant
Black Grease by the Black Angels
Dark Star by Jaymes Young
Dreaming (The Chainsmokers Remix) by Small Pools

I don’t expect it to be another 4 months ’til my next post. Thanks for tuning in + radio love.

See you around,

– DJ Airplane

Clair De Lune – AIRWAVES

“So it’s been a while. Why didn’t I text or call? Well, I’m sorry but when I knocked on your door at the base of your stoop you just didn’t let me in. I was offended. I was hurt. Most of all I was embarrassed. I put a lot of work into this you know – but it’s alright because we’re here now. I’m ready and so are you. That’s all that matters.”

That (^) is pretty much the reason why I didn’t have a show last week! I couldn’t get into the studio due to the end of reading week. I didn’t want to promise you – my great listeners – something I wasn’t sure I could follow through on. Sounds fair right? …In theory anyways.

REGARDLESS, I’ll save you from more of my irrelevant thoughts. Today on AIRWAVES was one of the best shows I’ve had in my opinion. Everything just fell into place nicely and although I wasn’t able to put on an extended show I had a great time. I spoke to what I thought makes a great music video with my ideas revolving around the concept of being memorable (touching on different, cool, emotional, and funny). A few videos came to mind that are awesome examples that you can find below! My artist of the night was FOALS due to their new album “Holy Fire” and International tour. Also their single, “Inhaler” is just epic. On the Airwave Cinema this week I featured songs from NCIS and Suits.

Notable show dates:

Ra Ra Riot – March 6
Stars + Said the Whale – March 21
Alt-J – March 27
Local Natives – March 28
Foals – May 11
The Postal Service – June 11

Here are those great examples of music videos:

Emotional (a personal favourite)

Track list:
Nothing Arrived by Villagers
Inhaler by Foals
1957 by Milo Green
Clair De Lune feat. Christine Hoberg by Flight Facilities
Pull Me Down (Emperor Remix) by Mikky Ekko
Wheels by Fink (As heard on NCIS)
Short Change Hero by The Heavy (As heard on Suits)
Clarity feat. Foxes (Vally Remix) by Zedd
Need to Feel Love (Adam K + Soha Remix) by Reflekt

Stay tuned for info on my show starting an hour earlier (6pm on Sundays) from now on!

Thanks for tuning in + radio love.

I Remember – AIRWAVES

I Remember – AIRWAVES

This week on AIRWAVES was relatively chill. After not being on the air the previous Sunday I decided to play a mostly remixed show to get us back into the grind of things. Coincidentally, I didn’t even realize that this coming week was Reading Week so I’ll be off for another fourteen days. It was a decent show though – with the Vancouver based alternative/indie band “Said the Whale” being my featured artist. Said the Whale is playing a show with Stars this March so if you enjoyed the tunes I’d definitely recommend checking it out (you’d probably like Stars too).

I also talked about what makes a good mix (songs you both like, songs that bring you back to good times, good lyrics) and I had some music from Vampire Diaries and Grey’s Anatomy (Daughter and Youth Lagoon). It’s sort of funny because I’m moving away from shows I actually watch …going to try to change that I think.

Notable show dates coming up:
Passion Pit + Matt & Kim – February 16
Stars + Said the Whale – March 21
Alt J – March 27
Local Natives – March 28

*The XX just announced a tour with Grizzly Bear!

I also did some talking about cool festivals going on and forgot to mention the “Gentlemen of the Road” tour. This features Edward Sharpe, Mumford, Hey Rosetta, and more! It’s sold out but if you want to try to get some tickets from other sources I’m sure you could find some for a little bit more money.

Track list:
Grounds for Divorce by Elbow
Camilo (The Magician) by Said the Whale
Down the Road by C2C
The Beat by C2C
Opium by the New Division
Butterfly (feat. Mimi Page) by Bassnectar
Medicine (Luqus Remix) by Daughter
Day Dream (Noah Hyde Remix) by Youth Lagoon
Walk On By (Sound Remedy Remix) by Noosa
I Remember (MrFijiWiji feat. Laura Behm Remix) by Deadmau5 + Kaskade
Takeover by Village

This is the video for Camilo (The Magician). It’s pretty good.

Cheers and thanks for tuning in! Have a great reading week.
