The Rap Up: Episode No. 16

“They say you gotta sell it to snatch the Grammy”

Well Chance, you proved them wrong. In case you missed this years Grammy celebrations, The Rap Up has you covered. Perhaps the biggest story of the night for the Hip-Hop community is that Chance the Rapper took home a total of three Grammy’s for “Best New Artist”, “Best Rap Album”, and “Best Rap Performance”. After a tumultuous year leading up to the event, with regards to major artists avoiding the ceremonies altogether, its clear the right decision was made. Additionally, even though Beyonce did not win “Album of The Year”, her incredible performance (while pregnant with twins we might add), and relationship with Adele stole the show. In fact, Adele broke her Grammy in half on stage so that she could share it with Beyonce, who she felt deserved the award just as much.

Big Sean drops “I Decided”

Big Sean came through last Thursday with the release of his newest studio album, I Decided. The project is laced with 14 tracks, and has features from Eminem, Jhene Aiko, The Dream, and Migos. Understandably, a lot of people have been debating the quality of Eminem’s feature, however we’ll let you be the judge of that. However, it is important to note that this is the first track Big Sean and Eminem have shared exclusively. Its also significant due to the fact both are at the moment Detroit’s most dangerous emcee’s. Overall the album seem’s to be well received by fans and even became America’s #1 album on Billboard this week.

Week 6.2 – February 13, 2017

The trio was in the studio for World Radio Day, talking about the UN and World Radio Day, the Grammy Awards, and Valentine’s Day.

World Radio Day

World Radio Day was started by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) in 2012. It is a themed day that focuses on fundraising, awareness, and promotion of the Arts.

Themes:

2013: UNESCO-themed: 75 interviews, 130 fundraisers worldwide

2014: Gender Equality + Women’s Empowerment in Radio

2015: Youth and Radio

2016: Radio in Times of Emergency and Disaster

2017: Radio is You — celebration of audience interaction with radio personalities

The Grammy Awards

Although DJ Winks missed out, Deej and Nix really enjoyed Chance the Rapper’s performance. Nix also enjoyed Katy Perry’s comeback and performance. We can likely expect new music from her soon. A pregnantBeyonce went all out with performance, featuring a bunch of dancers and her on a throne. Consensus? A bit too much/over the top. Ceelo Green’s contribution to the night? Giving us the meme material we’ve all been longing for. He was even photoshopped into several of Donald Trump‘s family photos:

Winks reported on albums expected this year. They are coming from: Flume, 2 Chainz, Rick Ross, Drake, The Killers, DJ Khaled, Future, and Enrique Iglesias.

Valentine’s Day

Whether you refer to it as “Singles’ Awareness Day,” “Galentine’s Day” or “Tuesday,” we have agreed that it is not about grand gestures, but about the person you are with. If you are lucky enough to be in love, every day is Valentine’s Day. If you’re single, give that love to yourself, or your loved ones. Either way, self-love and self-care is very important.

This week’s track list is as follows:

  1. Doo Wop (That Thing) – Lauryn Hill
  2. No Diggity – Blackstreet ft. Dr. Dre and Queen Pen
  3. Summer Girls – LFO

The Morning After… WAKE UP!

Good morning Hawks!

Hopefully you’ve all had a wonderful week since the last. This week Goldilocks and O$AP are flooded with midterms and seriously lacking on sleep! No worries however, they’ve brought their coffees and study questions on the air to share in order to sneak in some last minute revision

The first topic this week was all about greed. If you had the power to get what you want and get away with it without consequence, would you do it? O$AP’s question got the DJ’s in a pretty honest debate about their choices, minutes before his ethical theories midterm! Goldilocks seemed to be a lot more trustworthy in taking the high road, but it’s definitely apparent that the two may both use those powers for a a little undeserved profit! That’s alright for O$AP though as it seemed to be quite a deep desire to win the lottery some day, and abandon ship on becoming a lawyer or teacher. However… they both agreed that the money would go towards some good character building experiences, travelling the world non-stop until they had none left. Goldilocks has a good head start though, leaving for Costa Rica this Sunday for 9 days!! Talk about a reading week to be jealous of.

After ranting about how little effort they hope to put into making fortunes in the future, it was time to take a look at Goldilocks’ midterm questions. Has American media worked it’s way in to, and overthrown Canada’s? Goldilocks shared some insight on the lack of attention that newsworthy stories from Canada receive, due to the celebrity status of American media. Who’s news is more important? and who do the public care hearing about more? Certainly we hear about Trump every 20 minutes, and there’s always a new American blockbuster being produced each week. Is Canadian content being shoved to the back burner on Canadian media outlets? Let us know what you think.

Thanks for tuning in this week Hawks! Have a wonderful week and don’t let the midterms get to you. Reading week is just a couple of days away now and you’ll have the time to relax! Have a safe time at home and an even safer time if you’re joining Goldilocks in some international travels. See you in a few weeks!
