Hey! Listen!
Welcome back to Press Start to BGN, Laurier’s gaming show by a bunch of Game Design & Development students here at Laurier’s Brantford campus. The program is very new and so is our show, so for those who don’t know Game Design & Development is headed by Dr Scott Nicholson through the Brantford Games Network or BGN, hence the name “Press Start to BGN” which sounds like “begin.” This week we had a couple existential discussions, decided a game where you can’t pet animals is not worth playing and found out that modders are getting a little saucy with Nintendo. Thanks for tuning in!

What’s Coming Out Soon!
I’m BACK! How have you guys been? I’ve been good! Busy, but having the time of my life!! Alright, time to write what games are out this week- I promise there are a couple worth picking up in here this week!!
- MvC Infinite (PS4, XB1, PC) (September 19)
- The newest installment in the Marvel vs. Capcom Universe! Introducing 2v2 fights instead of 3v3, MvCI hopes to reboot and introduce their series into a new generation! Will it though? The game no longer has assists, but replaces it with a tag-based combo system, letting you perform continuous combos without letting your opponent getting a hit in otherwise. Infinity Stones make an appearance has a new gameplay mechanic, as it applies stat-boosts to your character depending on the stone chosen. It also has a story mode in it (Finally)! Don’t get your hopes up though, it has already been slated in the press and many people are talking about the poor art direction taken in the game. Recently updated, it looks better than it originally did. It also introduces new characters, as well as a new story villian by the name of “Ultron Sigma”, wohever that is. If you like MvC, I’m sure you’ll like the game and tell me otherwise. Opinions will be opinions.
- NBA 2k18 (PC, Switch, PS3, PS4, XB360, XB1) (September 19th)
- A new NBA 2K game! Pick it up in Canada and have Demar Derozan on the cover of the game! There is also a licensed soundtrack of 49 songs. It also has a new feature called “Neighborhoods”, which is like NBA The Streets except online and open world. Everything else is pretty much the same as 2K17 though.
- Echo (PC) (September 19th)
- Do you like a challenge? Would you like it if the challenger is yourself? Echo is a game about a character named En, trying to find a way to ressurect a loved one. She finds herself in a mansion which, as the lights turn on, reveal these black blobs which learn how to look like you, act like you, and are trying to kill you. As the “blackout” wipes their memories, they become stronger, more perfect clones of you and your previous actions as a player, which makes it easier to kill you. Run? They learn they can run. Hide? They can hide too. Shoot your gun? Suddenly they become deadly. Be careful, be fast, be smart, but don’t be too good. To be honest, I personally believe that this would make a brilliant speed-running game, and the way the AI learn how to be you is a brilliant mechanic. I’m looking forward to this!
- Pokemon Gold/Silver (3DS Virtual Console) (September 22)
- Relive the games in all their glory! Pokemon Gold and Silver throw you back into the region of Johto and Professor Elm, who reveal your 3 starters- Cyndaquil, Chikorita, and Totodile! Battle Team Rocket, Challenge the gyms, beat the Elite 4, and capture Lugia and Ho-Oh! Most importantly, HAVE FUN!
- Pokken Tournament DX (Switch) (September 22)
- The hit crossover is back! (wait, is this considered a crossover?) The Tekken-style Pokemon fighting game releases for the Nintendo Switch with 4 revealed arcade characters and an exclusive new character! Fight your friends and online foes in 1v1 battles with your favourite pokemon, as well as a brand new game mode!

Topic of the Show:
The topic of the show this week was what game would you suggest to someone who has never played a game before in their life. Not tag, not minesweeper, not a simple game of Go Fish. This was a simple thing to answer for some but perplexed others as to who this person was and were they okay. The important thing is, no Cassie’s were harmed in the making of this radio show.
