This week we talked about blood ivory, which is the illegal poaching of African elephants for their ivory tusks. Due to poaching the population has declined from an estimated 26 million in 1800, to only about 400,000 still alive today. Over 100 African elephants are killed daily for their tusks and it is estimated that the species will become extinct in the next 10 years. We talked about some things to think about when purchasing products so that you are not adding to the animal cruelty. Avoid makeup that is tested on animals, don’t buy a new puppy, try looking at a local animal shelter first, avoid products with palm oils and don’t buy ivory! (just to name a few)
