Welcome back to Press Start to BGN, Laurier’s gaming show by a bunch of Game Design & Development students here at Laurier’s Brantford campus. The program is very new and so is our show, so for those who don’t know Game Design & Development is headed by Dr Scott Nicholson through the Brantford Games Network or BGN, hence the name “Press Start to BGN” which sounds like “begin.” This week on the show we talked about the proper way to hang your toilet roll and the cutest platforming game to come out in a while. NEWS!
- Video Games most divisive event happened during Splatoon 2’s European Splatfest, where players were given the option to vote for how they hang they’re toilet paper. Over or under? (Over obviously, unless you have mischievous cats).
- The Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer came out and confirmed that the second game is a prequel.
- Skyrim is getting a hardcore survival mode. It’s free for one week and then you have to pay.
- Fortnite’s Battle Royal spin-off has gained over a million players.
- Assassin’s Creed Origins is adding a zero combat mode. Named, Discovery Tour you can use it to travel around the world and visit locations.
- Atari has announced they’re releasing a miniature version of the original Atari for 299 US dollars. This will include classic Atari games. As well as new titles.
- Coming out in 2018 is the Commodor 64 mini for 70 US dollars.
- The video game voice acting union SAG-AFTRA have reached an end to their strike and are going back to work after an eleven month boycott.
- No new Diablo announcements will be coming in 2017, but Blizzard has said they are working hard on the future of the Diablo franchise.
- The Wii Shop is closing in 2019.
- It was revealed in the original Super Mario World, they had intended forMario to be punching Yoshi in the head.
- The newest Super Mario Run update adds a new mode,a new world, and Princess Daisy.
- Roller Coaster Classic was released on Steam this week.
- Nintendo has blocked anyone from live streaming their games.

- Culdcept Revolt (3DS)
- A deck-builder? In MY video game? Culdcept is a 20 year old series that you have never seen before, but wow it looks fun. With a new elements and a brand new story, Culdcept Revolt brings the series back with a vengence! Boasting great gameplay and a gentle learning curve for new players, it looks like it’s never been a better time to get yourself into the series!
- Forza Motorsport 7 (October 3) (PC, XB1)
- The hit racing video game is back, and overflowing with content! Over 700 cars, 32 different locations (at launch), and more than 200 different configurations to race, Forza Motorsport brands itself as THE racing game to buy this year (so far…). It looks fun, it plays well, and most importantly, it’s fast. Just remember, keep your dangerous driving to the game!
- A Hat in Time (October 5) (PC, Mac, PS4, XB1)
- Heck! The most adorable heckin platformer is out! You play as Hat Kid, a girl who can travel amongst the stars, who is just trying to get home. This game is one of the most anticipated kickstarters of this year, and seems like fun! warning though. A lot of controversy has surrounded this game along their choice to keep Youtube personality JonTron’s voice in the game. Whatever your opinion, I’m sure that if you’re a fan of classic platformers, you’ll be a fan of this game.
- Stardew Valley (October 5) (Switch)
- This hit indie game is releasing for the Nintendo Switch! Farm and adventure your way through a game that is loved by many. The mobile gameplay on the Switch seems great, since a day only lasts a few minutes. You can play for a long time, or a short time, it’s really up to you.
- Layton’s Mystery Journey (3DS)
- It was an app first, but the next mainline Professor Layton game is here! (Finally) I personally have been waiting for this game since it was announced, and the more i hear about it, the more I look forward to buying it. Too bad I lost my 3DS… I’ll find it soon I hope. The game follows Hershel Layton’s neice, Katrielle, who is uncovering the mystery behind her missing uncle. I’ll be picking this up, for sure!
- Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga + Bowsers Minions (3DS)
- Nintendo is on a role this week, opening AND closing our list! Rounding us out, we have an old spinoff series coming back with a brand new title. Mario and Luigi is a sweet little platformer that has you playing fight sections of paper mario, combined with an adventure that has you travelling worlds with both Mario and Luigi! Have fun fighting through baddies and bosses in the 6th game in the series.

Topic of the Show
The topic of the show this week was do you finish a game before you start a new one? If you don’t how many games have been left unfinished and how do you handle it? From hundreds to still a pretty high number if you’ve played a lot of games you most likely haven’t finished all of them.

- Animal Crossing: New Leaf
- From Nintendo comes the adorable life simulation game Animal Crossing: New Leaf! In this game, you
are the mayor of a town filled with andromorphic animals. Talk to your town residents, explore your
little town, and enjoy various activities such as bug hunting and fishing. Modify your wardrobe and get
yourself a lovely house in this charming game available on the Nintendo 3DS.
- From Nintendo comes the adorable life simulation game Animal Crossing: New Leaf! In this game, you

- From What Pumpkin Studios comes the point and click adventure game Hiveswap. Based on the world’s
longest webcomic to date by Andrew Hussie, players play as Joey Claire, a fourteen-year- old girl living
with her brother in their mansion home. That is until monsters attack their mansion and Joey is
transported to another world where a rebellion is currently underway by the world’s lower-class
citizens. Brace yourself for impact as you transported to another world in Hiveswap: Act 1, available on
PC.
- From What Pumpkin Studios comes the point and click adventure game Hiveswap. Based on the world’s

- OPUS: Rocket of Whispers
- From SIGONO INC. comes the heartwarming story of OPUS: Rocket of Whispers. Play as two survivors of
apocalyptic plague as you try and build a ship to send the souls of the decease back to their home planet
for burial. Search for ship parts throughout the snow laden world and learn about the land’s mysterious
past. Available on iOS.

- The Division
- From Ubisoft comes the action roleplaying, survival game: Tom Clancey’s Division. Set in a near future
New York City, the player is an agent of the eponymous Strategic Homeland Division, or simply “The
Division”, who is tasked with rebuilding its Manhattan operation, investigating in the outbreak of
smallpox in the city and stopping criminal activity that is on the rise. Fight for what’s right in this
multiplayer online game available on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

- From StudioMDHR comes the 1930s cartoon inspired run and gun game Cuphead. To repay a deal he
made with the devil, Cuphead and his brother Mugman must fight a series of bosses to collect their
souls for the devil. Play in both single and cooperative mode in this hand drawn, Max Fleisher animation
inspired game, available on PC and Xbox One.
