Recap + Highlights
It is with great sadness that the basement aired its fifteenth and final show for the 2017-2018 school year. It has been an immensely satisfying experience being apart of the Basement crew this year and although the show has come to its end it has left all of us feeling more grateful for having this platform to express our thoughts. In association with ABS, the basement has been the voice of truth for Lauriers group of black students. It has not always been easy but your talents, and conversation has made the show what it was. Congratulations on a successful year team, you should be extremely proud of yourselves and everything you have accomplished this past school year! We welcomed back the former director of the Basement, Kanisha, who shared her awesome experience from being the station manager at Radio Laurier to now interning for TSN. Way to go Kanisha, you are the perfect representation of black excellence and its amazing to see Laurier alumni making sh*t happen.
The show started off with an intense discussion about Faith Goldy, and the Laurier Society of Open Inquiry association. This past week Faith Goldy a social an alt right social commentator was invited to speak at Laurier with a presentation she titled, Ethnocide: Multiculturalism and European Canadian Identity. Her presence on campus left many students, faculty and members of the K-W community feeling uncomfortable. ABS and the DEO are incredibly saddened by the situation that Laurier has put us in and we expect much, much better in the future. Hate speech disguised as freedom of speech should not and will not be tolerated here! After the music break, the crew then discussed the importance of safe spaces on campus. ABS, is a part of many of our identities and we are so grateful that this pace is available for students to decompress and talk about how they feel. Following another music break, was a discussion on the recent shooting of Stefaon Clark. We are always saddened when the life of another innocent black man is taken. The justice system is in need of dire reformation because we are tired of adding names to list of unlawful deaths. One thing that is certain is that we must always stick together and keep the faith that things will eventually get better.
To lighten the mood, the crew partook in a Would You Rather segment… part two. Would You Rather wear someone else’s dirty underwear or use someone else’s toothbrush? Pee yourself in public once a week or crap your pants daily in private? Brush your tongue on a New York city sidewalk or a stranger’s nostril? These were just a few of the absurd questions that we asked the crew members. Check out the recap video to hear the crew answers to some of these questions. After another music break, the crew shared some of their favourite experiences from the basement over this past year. From the cypher episode to some funny discussions, it has been a great year all around. Our final music break lead into our FINAL shout-outs and goodbyes. Thank you so much to all of the loyal listeners and supporters of the basement. It has been an amazing experience and we look forward to the future of the show! As always, love yourselves , keep it real and steady grinding , love yall ♡♡♡
