Discovery vs. Serendipity - Revisited

Discovery vs. Serendipity - Revisited

So last night was show number 1 and besides a few hiccups with the sound board, I think she went pretty good. A few jitters, awesome guests and some solid tunes all make for a great adventure.

On the show we talked with Gregory Oh, the artistic director of Open Ears Festival of Music & Sound , about this weekend’s Between the Ears festival. Going down to Kitchener to check it out? Here’s a full list of everything happening tonight, May 31, and Saturday, June 1. Be sure to add Tri Pride’s Unplugged & Stripped Down and the King St. Art Market at night to your list of things to check out tonight. I asked Greg to think of a song that he believes embodies the idea of discovery, the track he sent along is something everyone should hear. He sent along Alvin Lucier’s “I am sitting in a room“, from 1969. The track is 15 minutes long so carve out some time and give it a listen.

I know I gushed a solid bit and I’ll save those of you who missed the show the horror of reliving my stories about serendipity and hopeless romanticism and get right to the goods. Here are my top 5 places to go, people watch and wait for that special someone to stumble in:

5. The bridges of Victoria Park
4. The Original Princess Cinema
3. Old Goat Books
2. Balzac’s
1. Death Valley’s Little Brother

and of course, my top 5 favourite places to explore:

5. Waterloo Park
4. CIGI Campus
3. uWaterloo’s School of Architecture
2. The Tannery District
1. uWaterloo

Towards the end of the show, the charismatic gentlemen from Air Marshal Landing dropped in to talk about their upcoming release, You Used To Be Me , before heading off to their show at Maxwell’s Music House. You Used To Be Me comes out on June 4th so be sure to pick up a copy. If you’re looking for a digital download, you can grab one off of their Bandcamp.

Finally, if you’re looking for some tunes to get you through the day, why not stream last night’s playlist from 8tracks? You can find an online version of GS&CT: Discovery by checking out my 8tracks page. Also on there are 30 or so other mixtapes that you’re welcome to check out should you wish.

Next week on GS&CT starts us on a three week long journey, talking about connecting with an urban environment. From the Grand Porch Party and the Ontario Municipal Board, to Steel Rails and Climate Action, a lot of info is going to be coming down the pipe so be sure to mark your calendar.

See you next Thursday at 6!
